I have several long blog entries bouncing around on the inside of my skull. I hope to write them out and sit on them for a few days/weeks and edit them a little better than usual. There will of course be: Fencing. Fighting. Torture. Poison. True love. ... Chases. Escapes. Lies. Truths. Passion. Miracles. --I do finally plan on breaking my silence on "that which shall not be written about". Well, one of the things... for someone as boring as I am, I have a remarkably long list of events that probably shouldn't be committed to print. I THINK the statute of limitations is long over on most of them... but you can't be too careful. Names should probably be excised at the very least... some of my friends went on to fool people into believing they were perfectly respectable professionals.
We drove from here to Modesto to spend Christmas with the in-laws. It's about a 13 hour trip each direction, most of it through the I-5 corridor which is not particularly interesting driving. We hit some scary snow driving on the way down where we couldn't see the lane markers very well, but only mild flurries on the way back. We ate a lot of In and Out (Aaron's favorite) and found both a Pho place and a falafal place near his parents' house. The visit was good. No bloodshed. Only the legally mandated amount of yelling. We actually held to our pre-planned schedule-- something I can't really ever remember happening before. I bought a bottle of St. Germain about 15$ cheaper than I can get it in Oregon. I suspect I'm going to be kicking myself for not picking up another bottle of Scotch in another couple months... but eh... whatever. I grabbed a sample bottle of pear vodka and a different brand of single malt than I normally get, but not being a big drinker I'll probably hold off drinking either for awhile.
We listened to John Scalzi's The Android's Dream on the way down, and his Agent to the Stars on the way back up. Our reading tastes don't particularly match up entirely, but I was relatively certain he'd enjoy those. I was right. I thought about, but did not get the audiobook version of Breaking Dawn to play at Aaron on the trip. One, I would have had to listen to it too and two, I was worried he might actually crash the car in incredulous shock at various points in the story. As hilarious as that discussion with the CHP would have been... I went with quirky science fiction instead.
I also started in on my pile of "To Read" books while we were down there. I got through 1.75 of the 10 books I brought. I bought two more and received at least one as a gift. I wasn't even aware that Asimov had written a book of commentary on the complete works of Shakespeare... but now I own it. I must say I find the concept intriguing. There were four more books waiting for me at home plus there's one in the mail. I REALLY need to work on reading more on a consistent basis. I'm not even making a dent in this pile of books I want to read. Though I am totally finishing Spellwright tonight if I have to stay up all night.
I got a new phone for Christmas only I didn't get it until yesterday when we got home. My old number is in the process of porting... so it doesn't actually work as a phone yet... but I already want to have its little cybernetic babies and fondle it forever. I've got it mostly set up for the things I want to use it for. It will let me view Twitter but not post updates to Twitter... which I'm not entirely certain why, I think because the phone part isn't hooked up yet? I can now do 90% of my computer tasks on my phone. This SHOULD in theory make me more efficient and more likely to use the computer for working when I'm on it. My phone has more computing power than my first 5 computers combined. That totally blows my mind.
I think I'm really looking forward to 2011. The times, they are a'changin. Good. Bad. *shrug* I just like change. I'm weird that way.
