On the occasion of Pride, 2006

Jul 07, 2006 20:24

It's not about continuing the status quo or bragging about who you know,

It's not about chest size, dick size, wallet size or breast size,

It's not about money, class, position or status,

It's not about the Gap, BMW or living in the ghetto.

Forget styles, trends and pretending to be hetero,

It's about brother loving brother, sister loving sister,

brother loving brother, sister loving sister.

It's not about objectification of bodies.

It's about exploration of possibilities, of our heart and soul,

It's about drag queens at Stonewall, faeries and leather,

nature and magic, reveling in pleasure.

It's not about crystal meth, cover charges, attitude or greed.

It's about acceptance and love, truth and healing.

It's about fighting AIDS and expressing what you're feeling.

It's not about being fabulous at the expense of other people.

It's not about red ribbons or those GODAMN FREEDOM RINGS

Which buy us all complacency and make us forget the important things.

It's not about being told where to go, who to fuck or what to buy.

It's about questioning the status quo and ALWAYS asking WHY?

It's not about "straight-acting," "straight appearing" or self-hatred.

It's about breaking the ties that bind us giving something back.

It's not about living a lie and putting on an act.

It's about taking what is rightfully ours and never selling out.

It's about fucking and kissing, sucking and fisting.

Queer means no apologies to anyone, no fear, no assimilation."

-Timothy Buttercup, circa 1995
