http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/object/article?f=/c/a/2006/03/19/PROTEST.TMP&o=0 I happened to see this by chance as I headed towards the library. The library is directly opposite the City Hall (Mayor's Office). The crowd was gathered between the two buildings. Its less than a mile from where I stay.
What can I say! Its the West Coast! AND, its San Francisco!
I really like this city. :-) And thats the understatement of the year :D
I mean, its accepting, diverse, a little weird at times (shocking too!), intelligent and....idealistic. Its about being who you are without having to worry about conforming, about adopting the 'live and let live' policy. Its about space. Of course, the freedom that it gives seems a little too much to some. I guess you cant please everybody!
What made me happy about today was that I actually *saw* that the city (and Bay Area) is alive and kicking! So many of us oppose the war but to actually see people do something about it, peacefully, was a positive experience.
It is reassuring to know that there is consciousness, not just apathy. And that that consciousness has a voice, a spirit. One that cant be ignored. Like it or not!
Here's to democracy and freedom! And, of course, to San Franciso :-)
