It is my firm belief that when a child/person decides on a stuffed animal or a favorite blankie ( we call them Specials in this house) that that item becomes infused with love and becomes different from what it was. I'm not talking about Toy Story/Velveteen Rabbit kind of stuff, though I believe in that kind of magic too. I think if you are aware of these things that you can hold some worn out piece of toy or fabric that used to be a blanket and just know. Like FEEL it.
Elena has Buddy, a Folkmanis Emperor Penguin puppet, and Blankie, a taggie I made for her when she was a little over a year old. He has gone from just being someone she couldn't go to bed without to her companion. Right now he is sick and she has been taking him to the doctor and changing his "horked on" sheets. He not only had to get a shot, but also a flu mist thing up his nose. Poor Buddy.
Lillian has Googy. Googy was one of her first words and she said it every time she wanted that blanket. I got smart and cut Googy in half so now we have a rotation. One time she discovered the Googy Back-up in the laundry and ran around hugging them both squealing TWOOOO!!! I got it back pretty quickly. Elena knows I have a Back-Up Googy, but she doesn't know I have a back up Blankie.
Because of my own childhood and heavy blankie rotation, the back-ups were a requirement. The other way I assure they don't leave is that they don't leave. Very rarely do they get to go out of the house.
Anyway. Specials.
