here's the flaw in your argument: for the most part, writers are hostile to other writers, particularly in their own profession. So that when one of them slacks off egregiously, like George here, they see this as a competitor stumbling halfway down the course, so they may then take advantage, and when their agents goose them about their deadlines they can say "Hey, be glad you haven't got George as a client, he let his publishers hang for five fucking years, it'll be done in a month." Of course, said agent can always snappily rejoinder with "You can use that argument when you have two Hugos to wave under my nose," which they may very well do.
