I may be in the minority here, but I really don't care for Erikson at all. I don't like his writing style, and I don't care for the way his plots unfold.

I also prefer magic in my stories to be understated and low-key, rather than so hugely important.

Uh...fair enough but do you think he'll have his series done before the Mountain Who Does Not Write gets done with ADWD???

GRRM killed of three of the most important characters in ASOIAF with voodoo snails, not particularly low key.

Yet people aren't consorting with and battling gods on a daily basis.

Erikson's magic operates and a relatively higher 'key' to be sure, but that doesn't mean magic is low key in ASOIAF. Dragons, the undead, and a crazed witch are all very central to the plot. Take out the magic elements and there's no Wall, no Daeny, no Others, no dragons...

I prefer to think Mel saw those deaths in her flames and had BBQ escargot just to take the credit.

Oh I understand. Erikson is not for everyone. It is like fantasy on crack. A lot going on, mass destruction, battles and wars being waged over continents, gods and demi-gods,a lot of characters, cats and dogs living together, it's mass hysteria.

But it does hold my interest. I find his books fun. The dude has a solid imagination and work ethic.

Yeah, his books are pretty fun. But TBH, I think I would prefer if his books took a little longer to be released and he actually took the time to edit them and ensure that they are logically consistent with the other books in the series. Now I'm not saying I'd like to see 4 or 5 year gaps between books, but I would like them to be a little less rushed.
