Author's Note: Damn you, Royksopp, but at least you got rid of icky writer's block! I think. Ehh.
"Is he alive?"
"Barely breathing." The voices sounded distant, murky.
They didn't belong to any of his Turks.
Rufus remembered encountering light, vaguely recalled ducking out of sight and crawling out of the room before it collapsed on him. But that was it.
Someone began lifting him from the rubble and searing hot-white pain surged through every inch of his body. Rufus would have hissed but even that required strength he currently did not possess.
He couldn't even open his eyes.
Rufus was slowly slipping away. The voices were tinny now. His head was pounding. His body ached. He wanted to sleep and pretend this entire incident never happened. He could do that. He was Rufus Shinra, the most powerful man on the planet, and he could make it all go away. With just a snap of his fingers...
"Boss is alive?"
...it was all stripped from him. Suddenly, he didn't want to wake up anymore. The familiar voice only confirmed to Rufus that it was all real. He was hurting. He was nothing now.
He had failed.
