The world doesn't stop when a relationship ends. Not even when it's the final nail in the coffin of what was only ever unrequited love anyway. No, the world doesn't stop. It just feels like it does, for a while.
Sarah has cried too many tears over a man who never bothered to tell her he was still alive. He broke her heart, forgetting she only had one because she was just a silly human who didn't understand the cultural differences between Earth and Gallifrey. And no matter how good a job she has done putting it back together over the years, the cracks still show. So here she is, flawed, human - on her good days, she thinks, even beautiful. Older, wiser, and still sexier than Rose bloody Tyler. And much as she likes to think she doesn't need anyone, she's starting to accept that maybe, just sometimes, other people can be a nice thing to have around.
She'd almost gotten a cat. K9 was never there - she'd even been deserted by her sodding dog, that's how pathetic she'd become - and it seemed like the right thing to do. She was already the local lunatic, the madwoman in the attic, why not get a moggy or two and really ram the batty spinster image home? Instead she got a child. A son, technically only half a day old, someone who was just as alone in the world as she was.
If the world is going to go on turning and Wendy is going to finally grow up, maybe the sidekick needs companions of her own. And whatever else this new life is going to be, one thing's for sure - it's going to be an adventure.
