How Sharper Than a Serpent's Tooth

I have returned from California, and really not a moment too soon. My sister was running a marathon in San Diego and she called me some months ago begging me to meet her there. She'd even pay for half my ticket. The reason for her desperation is because our older sister, brother-in-law and mother are in California, and that combination at ( Read more... )

Ooooh, I met someone last semester who held "conversations" the way your older sister does. Sometimes she would even feign asking me a question, only to direct the topic back to herself.
God knows I talk about myself too much, but if someone else wants to speak I freaking let them speak!

Ugh, you know how annoying it is then. We all like to talk about ourselves, but no one more than my sister. She might be the most selfish people I've ever met.

You know I'm alway secretly paranoid that people think I'm trying to turn the conversation back to myself. You know, like when someone tells you a story and you go, "I know what you mean. I had a similar experience when..." and you launch into your own story. The rational part of my brain tells me that's the way people connect through common experience. The irrational part of my brain goes, "OMG STUPID! It's all about you now, isn't it?"

Like I said earlier, sometimes you feel like a nut...

I've been thinking that too. It's a fine line to walk, certainly. But then I picture the opposite, where one person just continually prods for more information rather than volunteering anything about themselves, and that seems more unnatural.

Hey, stranger. I'm always thinking that too. Then I'm afraid that it doesn't look like I'm listening well enough because while the other person's talking I'm always trying to sort out how much they've said and how much I've said and whether I've said too much.

Honestly, it probably means we're not doing it because I doubt the people who really make it all about them are that self aware. Or even trying to be that self aware, you know?

Ahh, fambly. I just gotta say, though, what the HELL is Russell wearing. Is that a full-length plush robe?

LOL It's like turtle fur footie pyjamas but flared at the top like a smoking jacket. When he came out wearing it he seemed kind of bemused by my reaction, as if it was a perfectly normal article of clothing. I'm sure it's very comfortable, but I'm not so sure I would wear it when company was around.

Tiny baby ferret is very tiny : )

Hey You. I'm coming to Denver on Friday and I'll be there until the sixth. I've got a pretty booked schedule but we should have coffee and meet in real life!

Wow. That would be awesome (in a nerve-wracking kind of way). When are you leaving on the sixth? Cuz with my work schedule that would be the only possible date that I could do. I promise not to sneeze on you if you promise not to cry on me.

Edit: Just re-read more closely. You're coming in THIS Friday and leaving the sixth (was looking at Jan rather than Feb). In that case I have Sunday and Monday off totally, or any weeknight but Friday. Lemme know!
