I love autumn

Oct 02, 2010 13:07

This my favorite time of year.  I just come alive during September, October, and November.

I'll admit that by the time February rolls around I am very, very ready for Spring and a little more sunshine.

Spring is my second favorite time of year.  Must have something to do with change.  I have always been a change junkie.

But Autumn is something special.   Back to school--always a fond memory for me as a kid.  I love the crispness in the air.  That *smell* of Fall.  The trees changing colors.   I love the plethora of produce available.   I even really love seeing the spiders come out!  I can always tell when Fall is approaching more by the appearance of webs on our decks, yard, and trees--even more than the turning of the leaves.

And let's not get started on Halloween.   In the past few years I've become disenchanted with Halloween as I've seen it start to get commercialized like Christmas.   But recently events in my life the past year have re-enchanted me.  I not sure I'll really get into it this year, but at least my love of it has returned.

Thanksgiving has also always been one of my favorite holidays as well.  More so than Christmas even.

There's a part of me that feels like October is more of the "new year" than the actual New Year.   I always start cleaning house (more so than even for Spring).  I start making plans and forming goals and reviewing the past year.   Our actual New Year has always been a bit of a MEH thing for me.

Even though I wasn't born in the Pacific NW, I think it and me were Meant-To-Be.   Because I love overcast days.  Generally that it.  I'll admit to times I crave a bit of the sun.  But I *like* rain.  I always have.   When I was a kid, even on the East Coast, I would stay in the family car long after the family had gone inside, just to hear the sound of the rain on the windshield in the quiet.  I've always loved the sound of raindrops hitting the plastic of an umbrella.  I don't hear that very much any more believe it or not.   Because living in the NW with our pretty constant and/or changeable drizzle, you learn very quickly never to bother with an umbrella.   Too much hassle.   Generally we just do without.

I sleep with windows open (much to the annoyance sometimes of Hubby).  I love cool air at night.  Even cold air--hey that's what comforters are for!  For snuggling under in warmth while feeling the fresh, cool air on your face!   Our bedroom looks over some woods and a small stream and I love hearing the breeze (or wind in the winter) blowing through the trees.  We have frogs that sing at night.  An owl or two that join in.   Occasional coyote cries.   On summer nights you can hear the sound of bat wings.   It's hard for me to sleep without those sounds at night.

And of course I love the sound of the rain at night.   So much.

Plus we are fortunate in the NW because generally autumn can be just as sunny as overcast and rainy.   September is usually beautiful with lots of sun, but not always a lot of heat.    October is frequently that way as well, but with the added bonus of crisp, cool air at night.

Today is lovely.  The temps are mild.   60ish overnight.   Highs expected to be mid-70s.   I've been cleaning all morning.  Listening to my new mix of folkish, pagan music.   Now I feel like making split pea soup and maybe some corn bread.   (Need makings for the soup though.)

And I kinda want to make this.
