Funk hole was the term commonly used to describe the posh estates that rich Britons fled to during the Blitz. These estates were out in the country (less likely to be bombed) and were swarmed with rent paying patrons afraid of the bombing. I believe the term was first popularized in WWI but I could be mistaken.
