I want a puppy.

I'm not going to waste my time pretending that he followed me home, Sam wouldn't buy it anyway. I'm going to tell him the truth. I was on my way back from Dante and Jeremy's when I turned a corner and heard noise coming from an alley. I thought it was a person, so I looked and found an injured puppy.

I healed him right away, and I'm only a little surprised that my ability works on animals because it worked on Madsen a few years ago, but the dog has bigger problems than its injuries; it doesn't have a home.

When I was a kid I wanted a cat. Julia started saying things about getting a kitten a few months ago when Danny got Jackie one, but I know that's not going to happen. Sam is terrified of cats. He thinks they're sneaky, and evil, and probably a whole lot of things that I don't know about. We're never getting a kitten.

But he didn't say anything about a dog.

We never talked about it. I know that he likes dogs more than cats, but its hard to say how much that's going to do for my argument on this one. He's going to think I'm crazy for bringing home a stray. And this time I'll even admit that its not the smartest idea that I've ever had, but I couldn't just leave him there.

He's skinny. Skinny means his survival instincts suck. Sucky survival instincts in Los Angeles means you're going to turn up dead by the end of the month. And I doubt he'd look the way he does if he belonged to someone, so turning him in to the police or something is out. Most of the shelters around here kill, and I'm not turning him over to die.

There's logic in this. I like this dog. He's cute. He's probably going to wet on my jacket before I get him out of it, but that's nothing that the kids haven't already done to me. Its old anyway. And he's scared because he doesn't know where I'm taking him. It would be nice if he would stop shaking but maybe if Sam sees that he's helpless, he'll take pity on us him.

I just can't think of any reason why this wouldn't work. I have more time on my hands now that I'm 'retired' from vampire slaying. I wouldn't mind having a dog in the house. And its only a matter of time before Junior and Lorelai start asking for a pet the way that Julia has. If we keep this one he'll be able to keep Julia quiet and stop Junior and Lorelai from ever starting.

We're going to get a pet eventually. We might as well keep this one. He's sweet.

Now let's hope Sam sees it that way.

I wrapped the dog up in my jacket a little tighter because I could still feel him shivering, and then held him close to me, using my free hand to get the house key out of my pocket. Turning it in the lock, I quietly opened the door, stepped into the house, and then closed and locked the door behind me.

So far so good. No barking.

I waited a minute to make sure that I didn't hear the kids, and headed up the stairs to Sam's office, stopping in the doorway.

He's looking over pictures like I was out on a hunt.

"Sam." Turn around, get a good look at him, and get too attached before you can tell me this is bad. Please? "I found him on my way home."

And I had to bring him with me because...come on, look at that face!
