"History in the making!" I know this line has been said by countless people since last night when Obama was announced the president-elect, but it's true! I went to Brandon's house for an Election Night party; We weren't trying to count our chicks before they hatched or anything, but we figured it was just a matter of time. In the 10 seconds leading up to the official announcement, the room was humming with excitement and tension. And when it was revealed, i'm sure you could of heard our screams down the street. Not to mention every subsequent state after that ("Colorado!" "Whoo!" "FLORIDA!!" "WHOO!!") and the jeers for McCain's concession speech. Though to be honest, McCain gave a very good speech, classy in my opinion. I wasn't expecting it. Palin's tears did make me gleeful, though. (Your tears are delicious to me, Palin.) Though he did seem fairly bitter at the beginning of it (understandable), and it still creeps me out when he smiles, I think he honestly meant what he said about moving forward together as a nation. Obama's acceptance speech had several people crying, myself included. I've never felt such optimism and hope in a room, nor indeed around the country. I can't wait to download it as a podcast, it was so freakin well done and inspirational. He has a hell of a job to do, but I am confident he was a the right choice and that we'll do it together.
Generally we've tried to stay away from race as an issue in this election, because we're trying to be politically correct. But this is an amazing triumph for African Americans, especially considering the history of the country and the state of civil rights a mere 50 or 40 years ago. Also, not to mention the number of seats democrats gained in the congress! What's it up to now, 21? And Oh, look: "The House's first two Muslim members, Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota and Rep. Andre Carson of Indiana, won their contests Tuesday." So, so tasty. A woman in a store yesterday offered me champagne and told me she hadnt been so excited for an election in a very long time.
I'm afraid I may suffocate in my own smug.
...Except... I've never been so proud of my country for electing Barack, yet so dissapointed in California. It's not over yet, but things are looking bad if you voted the way I did. Pretty sure gay marriage is going to end up banned, and I wouldn't hold my breath about any props dealing with renewable energy. I'm crossing my fingers for prop 4 to be shut down; which would require parental notification for abortions for minors.
Anyway, we'll see about those.
I got back from Berkeley on sunday night. I wish I could have been there last night, I bet it was a huge party. SF and Berkeley especially right now is Obamaland! Signs, buttons, shirts everywhere. But I was glad to be with friends. I had a lot of fun on the trip up there. Honnie's not what I could call a party animal or anything, so it was a lot of just hanging out together. Eating a lot. But that's totally fine, and is in fact what I expected. I came to see Honnie, and see her I did. The weekend included a lot of rain and subsequent miserable walking and waiting for the bus in said rain. Smoked some bowls on the Berkeley campus (which is GORGEOUS, and no matter how many times I tried to tell myself that I didn't want to go to Berkeley anyway, I would be lying), did the usual Haight and Ashbury, but this time to find me a new pipe (success!). Halloween itself wasn't as fun as it could have been, since the party in the Castro was shut down and there were no official (or unoffical really) alternatives. We ended up at the top of a hill that was bitch to climb but which offered an amazing view of SF at night.
By saturday we were tired of walking all day in the rain, so we sought shelter in a movie theatre. ("What did you do on vacation?" "Oh, I went to the movies." This happens a lot. Wierd.) And that night we had a blast with some drunken karioke. I have some great pictures. I'll post them later.
But on to real life. Kind of. It's my 21st birthday next week, yay! The day of, it's the traditional Dland trip with my mom, and friday the 14th is my 21st birthday bash. Trying to plan something kind of cool involving a tent and several sheets that i'll buy on the cheap at goodwill or something. Also this weekend I want to look/ask around for a tattoo artist, since I think the bird I want will be my gift to myself.
This month is going to go by so fast. It already is! I can't believe it's the 5th already!
Well i'm at work. Which means i'm about to watch some Heroes. And have some coffee.
*lifts her coffee mug* An early morning toast to the accomplishments we achieved last night, and the ones we will achieve with this new administration.
