Hi! I'm new to this community but not to HCL. I have pretty much held all my friends down and forced them to watch this movie. :) Spreading the Joe/Billy dysfunctional love ( Read more... )

OMG, this is a great vid, probably one of the best I've seen in HCL. It gave me chills, just thinking about Joe thinking that about Billy. Thanks so much for joining the group with such a bang! Loved it.

With a bang. Hehe.

Okay now that I have moved on from being about 12, thank you so much for the feedback. I was worried that people would look at the artist, shudder, and move on without watching it. Which, honestly, might have been my initial response as well. Thank you so much for being open-minded :)

This is the first movie fandom that I have made a vid for, and unlike my usual TV fandoms, there is not that much material to work with. I haven't seen a lot of other HCL vids so I was worried that I was just doing the same thing as everyone else.

Wow, I have just typed way too much. What it boils down to is: Thank you so much for your feedback.

When I first saw the song selection, I did think, that's a strange choice for a HCL vid, but I do like Avril and love HCL, so I gave it a shot. I thought the song went really well with the angst of the clips you chose. Again, I loved the vid. What other vids do you have out there and for what fandoms, if you don't mind my asking?

Unfortunately, most of my vids have been hosted on megaupload, and the links are expired. I can reupload some if you want. I have participated in dozens of fandoms, but the ones that I tend to vid are ones that are really rarely vided because they tend to squick a lot of people. Just a warning.

I have dabbled in the Viva La Bam/Jackass fandom, which is RPS so pretty squicky to some. Even those who are not squicked by the real person factor think the shows are too stupid to watch (which, they are pretty stupid, but oh so homoerotic).

Several of my Viva La Bam/Jackass vids are hosted on youtube, so here is the link to one of them if you are just curious or whatever : Click

My other RPS vidding fandom is the band Green Day (see the icon). Again, RPS squick but they are such pretty, openly bisexual punks.

My non RPS fandoms are the show Supernatural (which is primarily brotherly incest-based so again, squicky) and the old standard, Buffy, which was my first vidding fandom.

I had a minor squeemish moment when I saw the artist, but you're right. it does fit. And god, how Joe loved Billy.

Thanks for reminding me again what a great movie HCL was.

I was so afraid that that was going to be the reaction that most people would have. I would never ever have used this song if my roommate had not been playing it over and over. I would have been skeptical of a vid using Avil as well, but I am glad that you overcame your squeamishness and gave it a try.

It really is such an awesome film, isn't it? As I said, I have forced practically all my friends to watch it. It is like my litmus test for friendship: if you like this movie, I will probably like you.

This vid is actually a more unusual point of view for me to take. I have previously been a bit of a Billy apologist, but going over the movie with a fine tooth comb to make this vid, I feel that I have gotten a better feel of Joe's perspective. His love for Billy is just so undeniable and tragic.

We've forced every single friend to watch it, too. I met my girlfriend of five years at a Headstones' concert, at the height of my HCL love. :)

What I love about the film is how glorious apologist-free the whole thing is. Billy's an asshole, Joe's a dick, and together, it worked right up until it didn't. And then they tried to pick up the pieces, but they were both so entirely tied up in their own shit they couldn't avoid the tragedy.

Beautiful, from the first grainy frame to the very last shot. No matter how fucked each other were, with themselves or each other, there has absolutely no denying the sheer *love* those two men had. And HD and CKR did a brilliant job portraying it.

Poor you, though, having to go over HCL as many times as you had to. The suffering you did for your art! :)

I know, it is so sad that I had to watch it frame by beautiful frame rather than write my thesis abstract ( ... )

I'm not a big fan of Avril, either, but this worked. I think it'd be very unlike Joe to be so open about what he felt, but he'd still be feeling it.
That having been said, wow, it really is scary how well the lyrics fit the movie, ennit? And I know part of this is because of your beautiful, skillful vidding. All the little imtimate moments you've caught, and Joe's long looks after Billy. You really see his need.

Thank you for sharing.

I am in no way an Avril fan, but unfortunately my roommate has a love of bad pop music and an apparent inability to use headphones. I guess I can't be too mad at her because she did inspire me to make this vid, but still.

I am glad that you liked this vid. As I said ^ up there, the lyrics just seemed like Joe to me if he ever actually spoke about his feelings. Although, I think that he was more open in his music than he ever could be in "real" life, so maybe it sort of works.

Just back (after umpteenth viewing of vid) to say that I friggin love the opening shots: First shot, brilliant way to start - with the endning - and powerful, the way you've timed it with the music. Second shot: Such a contrast to the first, Billy, quiet, all alone. Third shot: Whoa, Joe back from the dead, shooting us his psychotic smile. Great stuff.

Not to say that the rest isn't brilliant as well *g* (another personal favourite is the "Don't leave me hanging... breakable thread" sequence).

Once again: Thank you for sharing this!

love talking about individual shots of vids!

Yeah, the opening for me was the most important part of this vid. I really wanted the first shot to pack a real emotional punch. Like have Joe say "This is the end, now let's go back and see how I got this far along". So the first and last shots are supposed to be the bookends, and the middle is more of a flashback, like what was going through Joe's head in the split seconds before he pulled the trigger.

The "breakable thread" part was really cool to make, especially using the acid scenes with "rock star" Joe on a cross-type thing, being shot. It is foreshadowing that this image of Joe as an unbreakable punk god is more fragile than it seems. One of the things that I experimented with was when the song says "It's not like we're dead" I have a brief flash to Joe dead on the ground. I don't know if anyone caught it, or if it worked, I just liked it.

I thought this was excellent! And I'm not much of a vid fan, so this is rare praise (although perhaps not very meaningful :-) I'm not a fan of this song (well, I've never heard it before, but it's not a style of music I like) but I agree it worked well.

I liked the timing with the gunshot, the punches, the kiss etc and the nice intercuts of them playing. I think you used a few clips I hadn't seen before in other HCL vids - it's nice to see some different ones used, especially the sunset silhouette shots. (The kiss, the shot, Joe's adorable smile, the sexy entering-the-arena walk - those are all staples, I think!)

Thank you for watching this even though you are not a vid fan. You are pretty lucky that you have never heard this song before. It was all over the radio here a year or so ago.

Timing is the most important thing to me in vids, because it really ties the song to the images, so I'm glad that you thought it worked out. I haven't really seen that many other vids, so I was really afraid that this would seem overly derivative and repetitive. I am surprised that the sunset silhouettes are not more used. They have a lovely cinematic quality. Thank you for your feedback

Okay, this is amazing. I was a bit skeptical when I saw what song you used but it works beautifully. Great vid. Thank you!

The "I can't believe this song worked" reaction seems to be pretty common, and I agree with people's skepticism. Thanks for giving this a try despite the odd song choice and for your comment!
