[I'm sorry. Don't blame yourself. None of it was your fault. You gave your life for the village, didn't you?

That had been what he'd wanted to say to her when he'd moved to pull her into his arms, before she'd told him to leave.

Saying those things now would be unthinkable.]

You honestly have too high of an opinion of yourself, if you think that anything you did made any difference whatsoever to the final outcome.

That sketchy information that you provided certainly didn't prevent my death.

Akatsuki would have attacked Konoha with or without your dubious assistance.

[He smirks.]

Really, if you're so certain that you're a traitor, you should stop wasting your time and simply slash that headband of yours and come join us. A medic of your caliber wouldn't be a bad asset for our organization.

I'll even put in a good word for you with Leader-sama. I do have firsthand knowledge of your capabilities, after all. If you were able to defeat me twice, you're certainly powerful enough to join our ranks. It would be a pleasure to work with you again, I'm sure.

...Perhaps you should have saved yourself some time and came with me when I left, if you'd felt this way then.

I'm afraid that if you chose to join us now it'd be purely a working relationship, however. I've moved on, you see.

In any event, feel free to let me know if you're interested in doing something about your situation besides wallowing in self-pity.

[If there were any surer way to make her feel like her heart had been yanked out of her chest, she doesn't know what it would be.

Join the Akatsuki.

Join the Akatsuki.

He suggested she--]

No.

No, I wouldn't...

[He was trying to hurt her. Had to be. He was still bitter about the marriage or the rejection or both and he was saying the most injurious thing he could think of. That's all this was.

But it didn't stop it from burning all the way down through to her core.

Join the Akatsuki.

In a way, she had, hadn't she? Giving them information wasn't so different from standing in their ranks.

Ohgod.]

I wouldn't--

[Sakura shuts the feed off just before the tears fill her eyes.]

[It frustrates Sasori to see Sakura like this. Even if he's no longer in love with her, seeing her suffering in this way still upsets him somewhat.

But when things are like this, he can't do anything for her.

Of course, it doesn't hurt at all that she really would be a useful asset. He may not have the authority to truly recruit Sakura himself, but he's certain that Leader wouldn't turn down the services of a skilled medic.

Maybe these false bonds that have caused so much suffering might actually be useful for something.]

I see that perhaps I've been too harsh with you, but it's only because I don't like to see someone as proud as yourself in this state. I only wished to motivate you into doing something about the suffering you're going through, rather than simply succumbing to it.

[His voice softens.]

It was my words that caused all of your suffering, and I truly regret that. I'd help you, if I could.

...And I could help you, if you were one of us.

I'll admit that I'm still rather fond of you even now, so I wouldn't mind having you as a comrade. I'd be happy to take you under my wing. You could even stay here with me if you wished, until you were properly settled in. My door would always be open to you.

I know you may think of us as cruel, but you really shouldn't judge us so harshly.

[His expression softens as well.]

We protect each other. We don't abandon a comrade in need.

If you were one of us, I'd never abandon you. I'd protect you, just as you'd protect me.

Leaving a village behind is easier than you might think. The bonds that one chooses to make are the truly precious ones, not those that are imposed by birth or authority. Clinging to the ties that hold you back will only cause you more pain.

[The tone he uses now is the same one he would use when he held her close.]

You saw our true faces, during those two weeks. You saw mine.

You can trust us, if you join us. You can trust me, I showed you that during that time, didn't I?

You could be one of us. You wouldn't ever be alone again.

It's clear you're suffering now. You wouldn't have to suffer anymore, if you were one of us.

It saddens me to see a strong and proud kunoichi like you in this state. Let go of the things that are making you hurt, Sakura.

[He pauses for a moment.]

Of course, there are always another options, if you do not wish to join our ranks.

Either way, seek me out, and I'll take care of everything.

Let me help you.

Stop it.

[She can't stand this. She can't bear to hear him attempt to console her like this, like a friend, like a lover (like he used to be).

She'd cried already but she knows it won't be the last time tonight, not by a long shot. There are tears in her eyes now and it takes every ounce of willpower she has not to let them go again.]

Please... just stop.

[Sasori has done what he could do for her, so he relents.

Besides, he doesn't love her anymore. He has someone else now, someone precious to him that truly needs him; he can't really afford to waste more time on her at the moment.]

Very well.

[For now.]

My offer will remain open.

[Whether or not it will ever pay off remains to be seen, but he can afford to be patient. He already knows she can be quite stubborn.]
