Yom Kippur

This story has been done before.

The butler did it, when you go back in time you might keep your parents from meeting, and Penelope is faithful. It is dangerous to speak with wolves. When a stranger comes to town he finds that he can’t leave, he’s fallen in love. Someone must get out of this old place, leave it all behind, go on adventures. The twist at the end is anticipated, but oh! The twist you thought it was is revealed not to be the real twist at all, and that too is expected. The only way to get out of the maze is to leave evidence of where you have been, goblins will steal babies, the mild-mannered, well, it will not surprise you that they have superhuman strength.

Because this story has been done before.

This is not a sad state of affairs. No, this is not earth shattering or even disappointing. For the world is a kaleidoscope, and with every turn our stories fall into fresh rearrangements. They are reflected off the mirrors of our hearts with an intensity that is shocking. Yes, true shock. Our legitimate reaction to these stories that have been done before. The clarity of these stories, the emotions, etched in our minds.

May the turning of your story find you in awe.
