traditions

Oh, Japan. It was fabulous and I definitely want to go back to study there for a loooong time. I dream of teaching English or French there. Or something. It's wonderful.

Today Zoe and I celebrated the 4th of July with a 2nd round of the tradition we created last year, minus one part. Last year, we came up with a list of 28 things (for the 28 grievances on the Declaration of Independence) that we had to accomplish that day. It included things like coloring in paper flags and lying in the middle of the street for as long as we could. That's what we didn't do today, but we did the rest. The rest included sitting on the pier and reading through the declaration, then taking turns dropping rose petals into the river as we stated a fear. It felt so wonderful. Lots of our fears had changed from last summer.

A rule we came up with this time is this: Since we obviously won't always be able to spend the 4th of July together, we each have to find someone to carry on the tradition with when we're not together.

We thought about it for a while and found it really hard to think of people we'd feel comfortable introducing it to. Sad and weird.
