= Rad

Oct 22, 2003 01:32

First of all, I'd like to anounce a rather RAD show involving no band that I would say was bad. A rarity of sorts.
Now Details.

Tonight Zen, Huck, Josh, and I went to see: (in order of first to last playing)
David Dondero
Criteria
The Jealous Sound
Cursive

We had to go early to try and stand in line to get Josh a ticket. Lucky for Josh, there were still some left.
We're now standing in line waiting for Huck, and Pedro (guitarist for The Jealous Sound) comes outside to use his cell phone and after a few minutes puts on a jacket. It's looking like he's going to go back inside, so I ask, "How's the tour going so far?". He replied that it was indeed going very well. We continued then to talk to him for about half an hour.
Cool Dude.

So we're very front of the line and Pedro comes out and asks if all of us have our tickets already. We say yes we're good, and he asks if we want to maybe sell one and he could put one of us on his guestlist. We say maybe and he says, "Alright, I've gotta go check to see if I've got everyone on here that I'm supposed to have. This is my one job on the tour...they made a big mistake giving me this job, I didn't turn in this list last night till 9:30."
Cool Dude.

So eventually the doors open and we go in. (Pedro not having returned)
We're inside and the venue is rad, we walk up all the way to the stage which is about waist high, and chill. Pedro later walks by and is like, "Oh ok good, you guys got in alright. I was just gonna try to see if maybe you guys could get some of your money back. I felt bad that I didn't get back out there." "Totally alright, have a great show." was the general sentiment of our responces.

So after waiting and all of us talking to this girl who was standing next to us, David Dondero come on. Solo acoustic act. His songs were humorous (but not silly) and nice. He seemed really genuine and he was endearing due to his high level of somewhat obvious nervousness. He'd never played to so many people. He had a song about comparing his love you someone with the highest scoring word in Scrabble (which Zen appreciated very much). Another about a waiter being mugged and fighting back with his wine opener.

After David was Criteria. Criteria is fronted by the guy who used to be the second guitarist in Cursive, has lived next door to Connor Oberst, and is currently also a corporate lawyer. They were pretty good and I'd like to hear their cd becuase alot of their songs were really cool and complex but kind of hard because I was trying to watch both guitarists at once. The downfall of this band, however, was the bassist. He appeared so out of place it was alittle distracting. He looked to be about 50 years old, had a thick beard, was bald on the top of his head but the rest of his hair was about 5-6" long.

Then The Jealous Sound. They played a solid set with four of the 5 songs I'm familiar with from their EP and the rest were new tunes from their debut LP(which I scored after the show for $10). They were made all the better by having talked to Pedro before the show. One noticeable screw up on the frontman's part but it was funny just because it was a quiet part, really really obvious, and he laughed and look over to Pedro saying, "My bad.".

And finally Cursive.
I'll start with the negatives because they're so few. Last time I saw Cursive, the stage was alittle less than half the size as tonight, forcing the band colse to each other and making them interact a bit more. That I think the only negative.
They opened with a Sierra, strange choice off of their new album. After a few songs someone yelled out, "You fuckin rock!!" to which Tim replied, "No...YOU fuckin rock! You and I should haaang out......I know how to party!". That Tim is a funny guy. Their setlist was mostly Ugly Organ songs (all that I wanted to hear)plus about five others. They rocked out, made people laugh, and were just plain awesome. I think Tim was alittle on the drunk side tonight, whereas last time maybe he wasn't so. But I think tonight is more of the usual intoxication level for him.

After the show I went and got a Jealous Sound cd. Then went over to Pedro to tell him he had a great show and thanks for talkin with us. He told us (Zen, Josh, and I) to send him and mp3 or something when we get one made. "For real man, I'm not shittin'"

Overall Concert Rating: Really freakin Good
