Looks like I got bit by bug #512787. That's what I get for running the latest unstable patches to everything - once every couple of years or so I get a system that decides to not boot.
Still, at least I now have a proper rescue CD with all the useful tools that you might need. It's frustrating knowing you have rescue and live CD isos on your hard disk which you've burned for other people, but not have a burned copy yourself, and be unable to boot your PC in order to burn the CD that you need to rescue it. :-)
Learned a bit about the rescue USB stick I made a while ago as well. Turns out that having it be actually bootable would have been a big help. Ah well.
