Confused by the sounds emanating from my radio

Yes, I know it's partly my own fault that I listen to Radio 1, but I'm not here to complain about how rubbish it is, or how it's just noise. Mostly.

First, on Friday mornings between 9am and 10am, there is the "Nick's Tape" (geddit?) which is actually a not-bad-at-all mix of recent and classic tunes. However, just after a well-executed mix has been completed, Nick Grimshaw nearly always plays a gorram air horn sample over the top, drowning out the start of the song. HOOOOOOOOOONK! HOOOOON-HON-HON-HOOOOOOOOOOOONK!!!!!!!!!!!!

What in the world of crack-smoking butt-monkeys is up with that? It's kind of like he's trying to draw attention to the fact that he's managed to successfully perform one of the elementary skills required of minimally competent DJs - mixing one track into another - and wants to show it off to the world, like a 4-year-old proudly bringing you a full potty. Or is the air horn some kind of "thing" that is done? If so, why? I can't for the life of me imagine what it is supposed to add to the experience of music. I tried searching for "Radio 1 air horn wtf", but couldn't find anything to enlighten me.

Second, the Harlem Shake. Seriously, WTF?!? OK, I get that it's a meme for uploading YouTube videos, but as a music track it's the absolutely most dull, vapid and boring piece of crap I've heard since "Million Voices". It does nothing, again, and again, and again. Who is spending good money buying the single? And why? If you're going to upload a copy of it (to which you are dancing) to YouTube, you're obviously not bothered about infringing copyright, so you might as well rip it off yourself in the first place.

So why is it doing so well in the charts, and being played so terribly (so very terribly) much?

airhorn, radio1, harlemshake, music, wtf
