Wedding interest - Why?!?

So it looks like I completely misjudged how interested people would be in The Wedding.

Why? Seriously, what was so appealing about it?

Why are people interested in the personal lives of the rich, famous and powerful? You don't know these people. Heck, what you do know is partly an image that the people themselves are trying to project, and partly the image that the media is trying to create to maximise their viewing figures. Even (or maybe "especially"?) so-called "behind-the-scenes" footage is carefully shot, selected and honed for a specific effect.

It's not like this even matters that much in any "professional" sense. AFAICT The Wedding makes no changes to the line of succession to the throne; there are no new additions and no-one already in line has been "bumped" any places. If/when they have a child, that will be an important occasion, but that doesn't mean I want to see a film of the birth, or care about the name of the doctor who does the delivery. The Wedding is a strictly personal matter - why not just leave them to it?

Finally, doesn't the coverage turn you off completely? Doesn't the fact that on top of the matter of two people getting married, an "event" is being manufactured almost entirely of inanities and frivolities just in an attempt to appeal to you? The coverage doesn't seem focussed on what the event is, but instead on what the media owners think will grab the most attention. What's being presented is like the worst possible spawn of manufactured pop bands, the ghost written "autobiographies" of people still in their 20s, and reality TV.

Why? Why are people so interested in this? Why don't they flinch and resist being herded so blatantly? Why don't they get shivers down their spines and turnrun away in disgust? What is the slightest bit appealing about this freak-show spectacle?
