One well-known side effect of working retail in the runup to Christmas is hearing enough Christmas songs on the radio to drive even the most phlegmatic sales clerk to madness and despair. But it also gives one the opportunity -- whether one likes it or not -- to actually hear and listen to the lyrics of songs one only known the chorus of, if even that, and there are some surprises. For instance,
Gene Autry's "Here Comes Santa Claus" gets kind of creepy after a couple of verses:
"Santa knows that we're God's children,
That makes everything right..."
"Peace on earth will come to all
if we just follow the light.
Let's give thanks to the Lord above,
'Cause Santa Claus comes tonight."
FOLLOW THE LIGHT, CHILDREN. THE JOLLY FAT MAN WILL SHOW YOU THE WAY. FOLLOW THE LIGHT, LITTLE ONES. GIVE THANKS. PRAISE HIM. PRAISE HIM. JUST FOLLOW THE LIIIIIGHT . . .
