Children 2

This article, Why we have children by Lauren Slater, from Parenting, presents information about on exactly that, the reasons for becoming a parent. It begins to list the disadvantages of parenting that give us a negative feeling towards taking care of a child. It then leads into the reasons we become parents.

During this article, I was surprised to discover that becoming a parent was not just a personal decision people make, but also depends on many factors such as genetics, primative instinct, purpose and to conform. Studies have also shown that " we seem to have a biological drive to connect with babies, to, in fact, love babies..." which is why caring for a child does not only involve carrying the child in your uterus and the labor but also in adoption, careers and love towards other peoples' children.

I thought that the information provided about this subject was very interesting. Because I thought that having a child in your life is a decision people make, it was interesting to find out that even those incapable of having children or those who choose not to are affected by children the same way as parents. They feel the need to teach, guide, nurture and love someone. Slater incorporates Erik Erikson's theory of stages in our lives, "Adulthood...is the stage of the care and maintenance of the next generation."

In 1968 two psychologists, John Darley and Bibb Latané discovered that a huge reason why people have children is to conform. Other people were having children and so did they. "The power of social cues" made more people want to have children.

People also feel the need to become parents because they "afraid of going the way of the dinosaurs", afraid they will not survive time and reproduce offspring. Parents create children to have someone to carry on their genes. They also reproduce to keep the human race alive.

The article concludes by stating her personal experiences with children such as: " As I write this, my daughter tugs at my shirt." and her unborn baby boy " doing flips and swishes in [her] belly". This demonstrates that she too, has shared the reasons she had a child. This connects the reader to the author.

The article began describing the challenages of having a child. This catches the eye of parents you have lived through the experience and can relate easy to the article. Anyone else who has worked with children can also relate to similar experiences. This article can help explain why the need to have a child in your life occurs. The author concludes the article by sharing her personal need for children in her life.

During the article the author uses a lot of quotations to express feelings. After a while it gets confusing for the reader to read. The quotations speak only about people's opinions and it's hard to focus on why we become parents. After not learning a lot about why we have children the average reader might skip through the article or stop reading entirely because they have lost interest.

The article states some very important theories and discoveries throughout the article. She writes about theories such as Erik Erikson that help us better understand the stages in our lives that promote us to have children. She also talks about Mendel discovery about genes and how they not only determine our hair and eye color but also our preferences. This hels us have a better understanding to why certain people want more kid then others.

It is interesting to learn that everyone has a desire to have children in there lives. All though there are mysteries about why people become parents hopefully the search for the reasons why children such a huge role in our lives continues.
