The Great Blackout of 2003!!!

Aug 16, 2003 14:17

Actually there was NOTHING great about it! URGHH!!!!! Basically it sucked!! I hope we find out who or what caused it (Blame Canada or Ohio or whoever!!), so they can PAY!!!!! Truthfully, though, I'm overreacting :) Here's the real tale: First of all, I didn't even know it had happened. My mother and I were visiting my grandmother Thursday afternoon. We were having a lovely visit and we left at around 4pm. We were heading to my mom's friend's house (Jane) because that's where my car was (I had met her there earlier), and there was traffic so we were taking the "back roads." We began to notice that all the traffic lights were out. Not just some of them--ALL of them, which was weird of course. But we STILL didn't know what was happening until we turned on the radio. Then we found out that the entire Northeast had been ROCKED by a HUGE power failure!!

So, we got to Jane's house somehow. It was difficult getting through the large, busy intersections without lights, but we made it. We stayed at Jane's, hanging outside where it was a little cooler. It hit about 90 on Thursday, just our luck!! Hottest day of the summer and NO power! We ate at Jane's, too. She cooked on the barbecue. Then, finally, we left around 8:30pm when the crazy no-lights traffic had cleared up a bit. We suffered through Thursday night with no a/c, but we made it. By Friday morning, a lot of people already had their power back. We, however were still sweating it out!! By the time it got to 11am on Friday 85% of Long Island had power, and we were still in the crappy 15% who were sweating! I left the house then cause I couldn't take it anymore! My friends out east all had power so I headed there. My mom's friend, Jane, also had power by then. Luckily we got our power back sometime early Friday afternoon. Finally!! My friend called my house and the answering machine picked up so we knew I had power! I had been complaining over and over again to my friends about my lack of power (who, me complain? ), so when we found out my power was back we all cheered and sang "I've got the POWER..." That was good! The only casualties were the milk in our refrigerator and some frozen items. Not as bad as it could have been. My mom rescued the other frozen foods by taking them to Jane's on Friday morning.

So, I got home last night and we had still had power!! We still have it today and I am loving the a/c!!! And my computer of course! I'm glad the biggest blackout in US history is over now!! I'm sure all of you guys fared better, but I did hear it went as far as Michigan. I don't know if it hit Wisconsin, Doc. I'm glad things are back to normal now. I'd love to see some new posts from Gus and Ginger here...hint, hint... Talk to you all soon!
