I found that scene unsatisfactory in canon, as well. They never really *did* explain Paul's motivation or character, or his connection with Grissom. Especially with the whole August 17th thing.
I just hated the whole half-baked "raised as a boy and a girl" thing they were spinning. I mean, were they trying to soften the blow that he was transsexual?
My bigger question, though, is this: What was little Pauline doing spying on her father in the bathroom from the closet in the first place?

I'm not sure...I got the impression he really was a bit of both (physically, anyway), and in our society of rigid gender roles, that can screw a person up. I mean, we don't even have *pronouns* to deal with the let situation, let alone emotional and societal supports.
Personally, I was born a women and have never had a reason to question that assumption, so I don't really know what it's like. But it seems to be that having a body of the wrong sex would be one matter, while having a body of both/neither sex would be another interesting set of problems altogether.
But Gil did describe it as "sexual reassignment surgery," so what the hell WAS he to begin with? I ask only because I like to have my details straight, of course.
My bigger question, though, is this: What was little Pauline doing spying on her father in the bathroom from the closet in the first place?I take it you
