Well gang, I'm packing up shop here on the East coast. I'm not sure I can fit everything back into the suitcase! I've received gifts! I bought clothes! I dug stuff out from the closets and drawers (I love it when I can "shop" in my own room, lol)! I hate traveling. I will be a big supporter of Star Trek style beaming if they ever get it right in my lifetime.
Being at home raised all kinds of nostalgic longings-- I purposely leave my Due South Season 1 DVD here and I watch my favorite episodes every time I come home. It just wouldn't be Christmas without "Gift of the Wheelman". And this got me thinking about my other fandom loves...
So, flist, tell me--> What are your fandoms? I have a feeling that we overlap each other, that Due South fans probably also like the Sentinel or Starsky and Hutch. Personally, I consider myself "in" a fandom if I've either written, drawn or spent hours reading fic or have collected pictures/various memorabilia.
Here's my list in some kinda chronological order:
- Ronin Warriors - 7th-8th grade - I LOVED this show. I watched it everyday for an entire summer. It was the first show were the bad guys actually won at the end of an episode. This was my first obsession, pre-internet guys. I was writing fanfic for this before I even knew there was such a thing.
- Due South - 8th grade - I remember my parents had just bought a massive TV 40" and we all gathered around it and watched whatever was on at the time which happened to be this show.
- Miami Vice - high school - totally, completely obsessed. This was the beginning of my internet access where I discovered this thing called "fan zines". I had a folder on my parents computer filled with pictures of Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas. I recorded dozens of VHS tapes from fx where it aired every night (sometimes more than once). I also wrote really bad fanfic for this show, which I never shared and no longer have.
- The Sentinel - freshman year college - this show was later for me because I kept coming across fic staring Jim and Blair and had no idea what this was. At the dorm, I got the sci-fi channel just when TS was picked up.
- Harry Potter - junior year college - I really got into this about 6 months before book 5 was released. I fell head over heels for Snape. It was during this phase of my life that I wrote "Circumstance", which is my most read fic. I stayed with HP for a looooong time.
- Starsky & Hutch - 2005 - I had just started my new job and LJ was now free for all, instead of invite only and so I joined up. I took a chance on S&H from fan love alone, buying season 1 without ever seeing an episode. I naturally fell madly in love.
- Supernatural - 2006 - I got into this show through fanfic-- my favorite SH author kept writing about these two brothers and I finally checked out the show. SPN saved my sanity when I got laid off from my job. This show hit me as hard as HP did.
- Sherlock Holmes - 2009 - the new movie did me in! If it wasn't for RDJ and JL then I wouldn't have ever latched onto this wonderful fandom.
- The Who - 2010 - I know, it came out of left field and it's still going strong. I've been researching them and watching their live shows like it's my job. I'm not positive but I think these guys kept me sane while my dad was at his worst.
Other contenders: The Beatles, Numb3rs, Star Trek, Batman, SW:The Phantom Menace
What about you guys? Please, anyone can comment! I'm curious to see your fandom loves, where we overlap, were we diverge! It's the end of the year, let's reflect fandom style... (and remind me of the ones I forgot!)
Thanks friends :)
