Perfection: A Givenchic Tribute
So today when tulita asked about the name of an Asian model walking the F/W '11 fashion weeks, I realized how there were so few international Asian models that I could remember them all by name. Then I was reminded of the Givenchy Haute Couture Spring 2011 show that happened just a few months ago, an unprecedented couture show that featured an all-Asian models line-up. Asian models who walk the big fashion weeks in New York, London, Milan, and Paris are few and far inbetween, despite a few big names like Ming Xi or Liu Wen. That an international fashion house would have an all-Asian line-up for their show was unheard of, let alone something big and all about brand-building like a couture collection. Yet Givenchy managed to do it. I was admittedly very amazed when I heard this news, my reaction was basically "...how did they even get enough Asian models to walk an entire collection??" but well I guess it helped that there were only 10 outfits, lol.
Anyway, when Super Junior M's "Perfection" came out (lol sudden topic change, everyone's going "huh?") somehow I was instantly reminded of these flawless coolazn ladies! I wanted to do something like a tribute to them, and the perfect chance came when Givenchy released a making-of video clip of their couture show, showing the craft and hard work of all the amazing artists and seamstresses in the house. Just as an idea:
"One outfit required 2,000 hours of cutting and 4,000 hours of sewing. A single pair of trousers had 90 meters of plissé. On this scale, appreciation of the clothes as they solemnly rotated from hangers in a reverentially hushed salon on the Place Vendôme became an almost academic exercise, like examining works of art in a gallery. [...] One gown featured a Japanese crane, again appliquéd, that rose phoenix-like from a cloud of feathers. Massive bird's wings were folded across a sheer skirt." (style.com)
"Tai Wan Mei" is more than apt for this collection. So here it is, a tribute to all the gorgeous Asian lady models on top of the harsh international fashion world: Ming Xi, Liu Wen, Shu Pei Qin, Sun Fei Fei, Du Juan, Jiang Xiao Yi, Ai Tominaga, Tao Okamoto, Park Hye Rim, and Kang So Young. Also a honourary mention of Daul Kim - the beautiful Korean model who died in 2009.
