customer: I heard there are comics for lesbians. My friend's daughter is lesbian.
me: There's comics for everyone, really. There's more variety than people think.
customer: Someone told me that Batman's got a lesbian in it now?
me: *can think of a handful of better lesbians in comics* Ahem. Yes.
I tried to point her in the direction of Strangers in Paradise, where the only happy and surviving couples are lesbians, but she's heard the renewed buzz on Batwoman, who will be the focus of the Detective series after Neil Gaiman's story ends. I tried to sell her gay!Batwoman's appearances in 52, but she wants the Detective stuff that isn't out yet.
I don't mean to hate on Batwoman. I'm just waiting for DC to do something with her other than build up hype, or make her an accessory to the Question. She's been in the Bat-family since 52, but never made an appearance in Batman or Detective, and as far as I know, never met Batman. Lame. Her press coverage has far outweighed her actual role in the DC universe. Perhaps that'll be fixed in the upcoming Detective storyarc.
Next time the customer in the store, I'll try to make her get the Essential Dykes to Watch Out For.
