I personally think that a part of him never stopped being in love with Gellert. But I love seeing him there before that was party sad, back when he thought they were going to (take over the world) be together forever.
I absolutely agree that Albus never stopped loving Gellert (and Gellert never stopped loving Albus- I am certainly not buying that "unrequited" nonsense from the interviews). In my personal canon, it was this love that saved Albus during the duel- no other explanation makes sense to me.:)
Exactly! No other way Albus could really have beaten him in a duel, after all--in the crucial moment, love for Albus undermined his desire to rule the world. Has to be.
Also, listen to the audio book as read by Stephen Fry. He KNOWS they're banging.
It's not like we're given ANY other indications that could mean ANYTHING else! We have a dude with an unbeatable wand, beaten by someone with whom he was evenly matched. Also, they were in love. DUH.
Stephen Fry is fantastic. Also, he should play Hermione. Trust me; once you listen to the audio books, he's just such a good Hermione! I just love the way he insinuates: "The two boys got on like a cauldron on fire. They certainly did."
