This has been my "mission statement" at work for the past week or more. We're neck deep in the middle of transitioning from old HP mainframes to new-fangled data warehouses. To be frank, it sucks. The interface into the data warehouse is kludgey at best and completely frustrating at worst. My task is to transition some data production automation into this new format, but I'm stuck dealing with database engineers instead of forging my own solutions. Thus, there's a HUGE rush to get everything transitioned but my efficiency bottlenecks when it comes to dealing with these people.
Oy. I can't wait for all this to be over with. It will be better off in the end, but getting there is like sawing off an arm with a brittle plastic spork.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, everything is fine and dandy. Sil and I have worked diligently on restoring her bicycle and are near completion despite a few setbacks in getting the proper primer coat and a correctly sized tire. I suspect we'll have it done by Friday or Saturday. I can't wait to toss all the bikes in the car and take Kori to the Bear Creek riding trail - hopefully it won't require a pontoon boat to traverse.
I finally got the meager monies from some freelance work I did before my June "vacation" and decided it would be a good idea to upgrade the video cards in both my recently aquired hand-down desktop and Sil's frankensteiner. We purchased two identical GeForce 5200 cards from Best Buy and scurried home, eager to see what graphical wonders would be unveiled. To my surprise and delight, the card worked like a charm in the hand-down desktop, making it possible to play Warcraft on. The graphics and clarity are just astounding - you can see light glinting off the cracked hardpan desert, the shine off my shaman's mace… impressive results for a card that cost under $100.
When we moved from my desktop to Sil's our delight transmogrified into sheer, unadulterated disgust. The same card that worked miracles on my machine turned Warcraft's graphics on her machine into a spastic, scribbly mass of epileptic polygons. When it comes to computers with her it's just never easy. Something HAS to be cantankerous or downright diabolical. Despite staying up til the wee hours of the morning she met with no success. We'll return that card and, perhaps, try another brand/type… provided she has an ounce of patience left for doing any of it. Bless the lass, I don't blame her one bit.
Fortunately her current card is passable, it just has a funky sporadic flicker when playing Warcraft. So chalk that one up to cynicism, I suppose.
ANYWAY, I'm back to the grind. Stay afloat out there.
