Science Fiction was a very formative influence in my life although I did start out with the mystery genre with Nancy Drew, I think Sci Fi's played a really big role in my life.

Science Fiction showed me the possibilities of who I can be.

Women in sci fi were astronauts, engineers, soldiers, and a Starship captain.

Sci Fi was a big part where learned that women can be complex and varied: we can be heroic, stubborn, defiant, petty, selfish and selfless. Manipulative, cunning, and sly. We can change and evolve.

We can be Rose Tylers, lost in life but finding calling in a grand adventure or we can aspire to be Aeryn Sun.

Then there's the Lois Lanes and the Marion Ravenwoods (yes, I count Indiana Jones as sci fi now because of the last movie even if it wasn't anything at all I wanted), the Kaylee Fryes, the Sam Carters, the Chiana's, the Chanis, the Irulans, and the Ivanovas, and Kira Nerys. The Zoe Washburnes. The Sarah Connors. The Cordelia Naismith-Vorkosigans

I love the moment when consummate Peacekeeper Aeryn Sun learned she 'can be more', and she did, she grew into more than what the Peacekeepers bred her to be.

I love that Sarah Connor was an ordinary waitress turned hero (not just the mother of the hero) or Rose was a simple shop girl who found her taste for adventure and has a knack for saving the world. I love that Lois is a fearless journalist and the stars reached for her.

I love every iteration of women who fill up the science fiction landscape. I love that we in science fiction we can all go where no one has ever gone before, that we can see wonders, that there's so much possibility of heartbreak or finding peace in a ragtag team, or even realize that you can be more than you ever thought you can be.
