I enjoyed watching that, there were some rough parts, as any pilot but I enjoyed it over all. I also admit squeeing like a dolphin when I noticed the episode mirroring the iconic imagery of its comic roots.
Gotham pre-Batman was a city that stood precariously on a set of 'rules'. Rules that govern everyone in the city. Organized crime needs the law keep their laws in order and give them leeway.
And in this version of the universe, Jim Gordon is a newly minted detective. Shiny and new, and self righteous and I thought Ben McKenzie was laying it on all little too thick. I hope he gets to back away from that a bit, and the script lets him back away.
Gordon is an idealist in a world filled with cynics. Bullock is the largest and most jaded cynic of them all. He tries to school Gordon into the 'rules' everyone lived by but Gordon, of course isn't biting any of the lessons Bullock is teaching. Ben McKenzie has to work the tight rope between being a good man in the sea of cynics like Bullock and not appear too self righteous that people will be turned off.
Gordon's so much of a hot head, he still has a lot to prove. He's not the iconic Commissioner Gordon we know yet. It would be fun watching him grow into that.
Of course, the other person I'm so, so fascinated by is Selina, the silent observer to Bruce's pain. I was knocked back at realizing Selina was right there from the very beginning, witnessing Bruce go from happy to orphan in a space of a minute. I love that she's always there, watching. I shipped them before of course, but adding in this detail made my OTP feelings for them grow.
Jada Pinkett Smith as Fish was also fascinating to watch, she has her own magnetic pull and how she'll stand amongst the Crime Lords in Gotham would be fun to watch play out!
