Once Upon A Time - The Thing You Love Most, 1x02

I watched the pilot and was so charmed by it even though it was uneven and cheesy. But sometimes people need cheesy in their lives, y'know?

I really enjoyed this new episode even though there were parts I found dragging. I loved that they're adding in another layer to Regina because I would really love it if she wasn't just pure evil.

I love that she has a friend in Malificent and Malificent wasn't actually all that bad either. Even though the whole scene, especially the battle scene was filled to the brim with awkward Fantasy Prose and cheese.

C'mon guys, can't you think of a more awesome word than Dark Curse?

The curse is a two edged sword, Regina only wants to be happy and somehow her happiness was tied up with the something Snow White/Mary 'took away'. She engineers the curse in such a way that she can be happy at the expense of other people.

Or so she thought.

Because the mechanics of the curse entails sacrificing 'The Thing She loves Most' the curse ensures she would never, ever be happy again.

And, the thing Regina loved most was her father but her bitterness was so twisted in her that she killed her own father to enact the curse. This, IMO, is the reason why she can never feel love again no matter how hard she tries. She sacrificed her own heart and there's nothing she can have or do now to ever fill up that void she created.

It doesn't stop Regina from trying though and adopting a son and naming him after her father is, I think, evidence of that. She brings up Henry expecting that somewhere along the way Henry could fill up the void and maybe she would end up loving Henry. But it doesn't happen.

Another thing I adore in this show is how central and important Emma and Mary's relationship is. The very reason why Emma can be the hero that she will become is because Mary gave her up to give Emma the best chance in fighting off the curse and by giving Emma up she puts all her faith and love on Emma.

They begin a tentative friendship and one that, skeptical as Emma is, Emma can't help but want. And I love that. So much. I love that it's a mother-daughter relationship that's so central to the show.

Also, maybe Regina should have made herself into an awesome apple farmer instead of mayor. She seems happier with her apples and seems genuinely miffed that no one would eat her apples! She tended the apples since she was a child! Her apples are awesome, why won't anyone eat them?!
