Sarah Shahi is pregnant!

Congratulations to Sarah!

But what would that mean for our Detective Reese?

Unfortunately, it means less screen time for our favorite no nonsense detective. But it also comes at a time when Rand actually panned a separation between the partners (No, say it ain't so, Rand!).

Dani will be recruited into a joint FBI-LAPD taskforce and this separation in Rand's own words:
"We wanted to diverge their stories somewhat, to separate them geographically to make them start doubting each other, tear them apart somewhat. And then hopefully, if they can work it out, [we can] bring them back together in a stronger fashion."

Agh. I can't take the detectives being torn apart or doubting each other!

Whatever the reason is behind Dani being recruited into the taskforce (a yay! for me and good callback to her undercover days) I think the PTB are using it as an excuse to break the partners apart.

With Dani out of the LAPD station, Charlie's out a partner. So, the question also becomes: Who will be Charlie's temporary partner?

This storyline could be good for the partners, just like when they attempted to separate Mulder and Scully way back when, despite the separation they still came back stronger.

What do you guys thing?

(And no, I'm not going to even consider the showrunners incorporating Sarah's pregnancy in the show. Dani is not in a place to have kids and just, no. *crosses arms and gives Dani stubborn stare*)

Recs

A lot of fantastic yuletide Life fics were written (and I will get to those recs!) But I just have to rec this now:

Visiting Hours by dsudis
Gen, post-"Trapdoor". PG. 1,365 words.
Charlie, Rachel, Constance, Dani.
Nobody ever visited him who wasn't paid to, when he was in actual prison. So that part's an improvement.

Fantastic short piece and each visit through to character but the best section has to be the last one. Perfect, perfect partnershippery.

A few days ago I finally finished posting my Ted-Dani fic:

Gethsemane
Ted Earley, Dani Reese, Charlie Crews. Gen. 11,500 words.
Sometimes there are people you can count on to save you..
Post-Trapdoor

It occurs to me only now that Gethsemane is actually a curtain fic. Curtain fic, as defined by Penknife is:
...fic in which the characters shop for curtains together. That is to say, it's domestic fic, or more to the point domestic kink, not necessarily in the sexual sense -- generally not in the sexual sense -- but in the sense that part of the emotional payoff for the writer and reader is simply getting to see the characters in this situation. As the "shopping for curtains" scenario implies, it's usually a genre of established relationship fic, or a post-first-time-sex part of stories that establish a relationship.

Only, Ted and Dani are not in an established relationship nor are they in a sexual relationship nor is it a point of my story. But it is a curtain fic because Dani and Ted find themselves in a situation where they have to deal with each other in a domestic setting.

Dani is forced, or actually, takes it upon herself to take a caretaker role on Ted, a role she's not all that adept for. She is a good detective and an awesome partner but she is not the type of person you ask to watch your pet.

Your pet won't die, she'll make sure of that but your pet also won't have a great ball of a time with her. She'll feed it, pat it but other than that she won't know what to do with it.

I sort of see Dani post-undercover, post-rehab as someone who is now, kind of lost socially. Like she's forgotten how to be social with another person, she's spent so much time in her head, she's forgotten how to talk to people. She isn't as bad as Charlie, she's normal in comparison to Charlie but my feeling is stick her in a social situation (outside of undercover and work), like meeting her in a coffeeshop and strike up a conversation and all you'll get is an uncomfortable shift of the shoulders and one line answers because she'd really, really prefer not to talk.

And, also, I love seeing her through Ted's eyes.

Ted is another person who finds himself in an awkward situation. Really, he's just that normal guy who wants nothing more but to work with money, hang out with his friends, maybe work the garden a bit. I get the sense after prison a lot of the fun!Ted was rubbed out leaving behind this cautious, resigned man who just wants to put his head down and work his time.

He doesn't know what to make of Dani or the fact that she's there staying in Charlie's house being scary protective. But he soon realizes that Dani is also as lost as he is... as Charlie is sometimes even though he acts like he's figured things out. And then he realizes as much as Reese is taking care of him, he's also responsible for her well being too. So, he starts cooking and inviting Dani for dinner and starts watching out for her in his own way.

Also, he really thinks Dani's diet isn't all that healthy and much as I love the detectives I think Crews and Reese are a bit lost in the taking care of themselves department.

It's a character study about two people who don't have a lot in common, connected to one man they both care about. And also, brings up another story kink of mine: created families. I love how, in the end, they are family.

Reading through the feedback, it didn't occur to me while writing to never have Charlie wake-up, my goal was always have Charlie wake-up by story's end but I suppose that's the thing about chaptered posting, by breaking-up the story I unwittingly upped the possibility that Charlie won't wake-up. It's really a fascinating how a story changes (slightly) with the means you deliver it.
