he manages to make Jane likable despite his arrogance

I'm obviously biased, because I looooooooooooooove Simon Baker, but I would be SO GONE from this show if it weren't for him. I'm not entirely sure I like Patrick, despite how charming Baker makes him, which has more to do with not being sure where his character is being taken. Bruno Heller has earned leeway via Rome, and if that show is any indication, Heller has the ability to make incredibly warped and fundamentally unlikeable characters interesting and fascinating to watch. Vorenus, for example, functions on both strength of writing and portrayal. The man is not likeable, yet I loved watching him. And I'm hoping the same thing will happen with Patrick. I'm really hoping that they're laying the groundwork for some awesome characterization, that the sharp edge here is the Patrick is still the same arrogant asshole who got his family killed five years ago. I have to rewatch 2.02, because I think that whole convo Patrick had with the kid brother, about being sorry... I want to think there's something there, but I was kinda distracted at the time while watching, so yeah.

This show is definitely not like Life though, but I keep making mental comparisons. I can't help it!

Guys, what did I say about securing the music rights? I thought we talked about this??

... Oh no, you're kidding me. So they *didn't* get repeat rights? Does that mean we lose the music AGAIN for the eventual DVD release for S2? Because I will tell you now: I watched S1 the whole way through on DVD, and there were moments I literally wanted to cry because of the changed music. I know I keep saying it, but one of the ones that REALLY kills me is "Down Boy" in the finale. Like I can't even put into the words how WRONG the replacement music is. C'mon, Rand. Don't make your fans cry. That's just mean.

I know what you mean about Vorenus, he isn't likable but he was an honorable man but he refused to bend and yet I loved him because the writing and the acting was fantastic. Like you I don't know how to take Patrick, do I like him, like him or do I like him because of Baker's charisma?

It's hard not to compare, right? After Life I compared every cop show to it!

*sigh* unfortunately, it seems that way, when they aired it here and I was so excited to watch I couldn't make myself do it because the music was all wrong. You're right about wanting to cry... Rand, don't let the powers that be dictate your money rights thing! You deserve awesome music for repeats and DVDs!

Vorenus is totally unyielding. It's what makes him fascinating and difficult, it's his strength and his weakness, his greatest virtue and his deepest flaw. And I'm kinda hoping Heller is going for the same thing with Patrick and his arrogance, this double-edged sword. It actually took me awhile to warm up to Vorenus and really get into his character. So yeah, hoping for that for Patrick, too.

After Life I compared every cop show to it!

Same. It's hard not to, since I feel it redefined so much of what has become accepted as a part of the genre while still adhering to the basic format.

Re: music. CRIES. That's, like, all I can really say. CRIES.
