the things i do when i'm bored:
today i did some math and figured out that the farthest a person can walk away from you before the curvature of the earth hides them from your field of vision is just over 7 miles. of course, this isn't taking into account buildings and trees and tall grass and other people. just if the world was a big shiny, smooth ball and you were the only two on it. you could stand 7 miles apart and not see each other.
pretty neat huh.
also i figured out that my computer at work isn't capable of drawing a circle that is 41851444.8 feet in diameter. the graphics get all glitchy. =/
although, i'm finding out that the earth isn't actually a circle. it's 25 miles bigger around the equator than it is around the prime meridian so technically it's an ellipse.
i didn't take any of that into consideration because if i can't draw a circle that's 41851444.8 feet in diameter, i'm sure as hell not going to be able to draw an ellipse that's 41851444.8 x 41712000.8.
that's a flimsy excuse though because i didn't actually draw a circle that was 41851444.8 feet in diameter. i drew it in miles (7926.41) and then drew a 6 foot tall person (which is actually 0.001136 of a mile.) and drew the line of sight that way, so i guess technically i could . . . .
oh fuck it. at numbers that big it's not going to make that big of a difference.
but what if it were the persepctive of a child? i wonder if it would make a bigger difference to someone who was 3 feet tall instead of 6 feet tall. hmmmmmm. . . ..
AHA!
from the perspective of two children, just under 3 feet tall each, they'd only have to be standing 5 miles apart before they become invisible to each other.
math is cool.
