Ah, good question. From what I understand the Headmasters believe that having an Instructor Mentor gives you students someone to bring your problems to who will also help with training and selecting the best classes for you. They have the job of representing you if there is ever a reason you are called out by another Instructor, usually for bad behavior, and they can approach the Headmaster for you in regards to special matters.
Okay...how about the Headmasters think it's a good idea, so unless you can find some sympathetic instructor to help you get out of it, it's considered mandatory.
