“Nick, I really think you should take a break.”
They haven’t seen each other much for the last days and now they could finally spend some time together. After they got together Nick had been spending much more time at Monroe’s, but still, Nick’s work (well, both of them) was demanding.
Monroe put a bowl of salad on the table as Nick sat down, looking at his plate. He was obviously tired, and Monroe would have realized that even if Nick hadn’t told him he had just finished another case. Apparently they had been assigned another one, but Nick had been told to go home and get some rest, since Hank and Wu had promised to work on it until he gets back.
He had called Monroe a half an hour before arriving at his place, apologizing for the late call. Monroe had been just getting ready to go to sleep, but having heard the exhaustion in Nick’s voice, he had quickly put on some clothes and had prepared something light to eat, since he had been almost a hundred per cent sure Nick hadn’t had time to eat anything. As he had found out a half an hour later, he had been right.
When Nick had entered the house and saw a big bowl of salad, his eyes had lit up right away. He had offered to set the table but Monroe had just told him to sit down and relax for a while, since he hadn’t wanted him to fall down and hurt himself. So Nick had sat down and had started talking about the new case.
“Monroe, I feel like we’ve missed something. I just… I just hate it.”
Monroe sighed, putting salad on Nick’s plate, and handing him a few pieces of garlic bread.
“I’m not really surprised, you know,” he said. “It’s easy to miss things when you’re tired and clearly not sleeping enough. Don’t get me wrong, man, but you look like you’re about to fall asleep in this chair.”
“I’m fine, Monroe. Really,” Nick ate a spoonful of salad, moaning quietly. “This is amazing.”
“Thanks,” Monroe snorted at rather loud sounds of clear appreciation Nick was making. “I’m not even going to ask what have you been eating today.”
“Yeah, that would be wise.”
Nick was clearly hungry, because he ate two more helpings of the salad and after they cleaned up, he went to sit down on the couch in the living room, sighing.
“Nick, man, you should get some sleep. We both should, actually. I mean it,” Monroe stepped closer to Nick and put one hand on his shoulder, squeezing gently. “I know you want to solve this case, and you will, as always, but you’re exhausted. You need a break.”
“Monroe, could you look at the pictures? Please?” He asked, as if completely ignoring what Monroe said. “Just tell me if the footprints remind you of anything.”
Monroe just shook his head, resigned. Nick could be so stubborn sometimes.
“Okay, fine. But,” he snagged the pictures from Nick’s hand quickly, not letting him react, “after that we’re getting some sleep, got it? I need my beauty sleep, man.”
Nick looked at the floor, not even arguing, but the sheepish expression on his face told him more than enough.
“I don’t recognize any of those,” Monroe said after a while, squinting to get a better look at the details. “They do look strange for footprints, I guess, but I don’t think I’ve seen anything similar before. You found them on the crime scene?”
“Near. I’ve been there before I came here, actually.”
“Is this crime scene near some dry cleaner’s or anything? Because if that helps, I did smell some chemicals on your jacket, like the ones used to do laundry.”
“I’ll call Hank in the morning and ask him,” Nick leaned back against the sofa and Monroe put his hand on his shoulder again, this time touching the soft skin of Nick’s neck gently. Nick leaned against his hand briefly, closing his eyes.
“Come on, let’s go upstairs. As tempting as it sounds, I’m not carrying you upstairs. Not when I’m this tired at least. That’s a disaster waiting to happen.”
“Mhm.”
Before they reached the bedroom Nick yawned two times. As Monroe handed him pajamas to sleep in, he noticed that the Grimm could barely keep his eyes open. Since Nick started to spend more time at Monroe’s place he also kept more of his belongings there, which was especially useful in situations such as this one. And Monroe didn’t really mind.
