Just recently got back from the ball in Pasadena. It was very much like the Gaskell, but with a few key differences.
1. They used dance cards. Dance cards are cool. They do put a bit of pressure on you to reserve dances, especially with popular people.
2. Fewer dances in total.
3. A much, much higher proportion of set dances. This is basically the reason for #2, as they spent a good deal of time to teach each one.
4. The only lead/follow dances were waltzes and polkas. I have no complaint about this. ;)
5. A rather older crowd.
6. They really led people around by the nose for the set dances. The MC took his job very, very seriously.
But I met people. Had a good time. My waltz and polka are definitely rusty, although some of my decrease in repertoire might be accounted for by the relatively short duration of these songs. People are trying to get me back for a ballroom event next Saturday. Yay fun.
