Pancakes?

What is it with pancakes lately? Everyone I know "really wants pancakes", "needs to make some pancakes" or "is trying to make pancakes". Its an epidemic. Maybe its a reaction to a cultural reference I somehow missed. This is likely because I don't watch TV or listen to the radio. Still...

Whats the deal? I hate pancakes by the way.

what's it, really? in my country, the craze has really worn off after last Sunday, as it was Maslenitsa and everybody had to make pancakes and forgive each other. But that all had nothing to do with Christianity, although they are trying to make it look like something highly spiritual.
From last Monaday on, it's Lent.
