Maybe it's just me, but I find Desiderata Valley dreadfully boring. According to its introduction, "Who knows what destiny has in store for the Sims of Desiderata Valley?" Damn straight, who knows, because EAxis decided it didn't want to deal with any of the families.
I've been so stuck on Strangetown that I never ventured to other neighborhoods. Actually, when I first started playing the Sims I was always in Pleasantview. But ever since I stepped foot into Strangetown, I never went back. Now I'm looking to see what the other newer neighborhoods are like, but so far I'm not impressed.
I decided to start with the Contrary family as my first DV makeover.
Edward Contrary. A Knowledge Sim whose OTH is Science. Loaded the game and immediately he and Rick were throwing slaps like two high school bitches in a parking lot. His facial features remind me of the Curious brothers, so I may connect him as a cousin.
Opal Contrary, the Nature-loving Knowledge Sim. Wishes her son wouldn't be so hooked on games but hey, if that's what he loves... Except she doesn't have a great relationship with her son either. And don't fall for her starry smile - her normal expression looks like a total bitch. But since Opal seems to try harder at being a parent than Edward does, I gave her a Family secondary aspiration and dressed her up.
An interesting find is that despite the family summary and Opal's love for her husband and kid, neither of them have a great relationship with Rick. In fact, they're both enemies with him, but that's probably stemmed from Rick's ~teen angst~. However, upon looking at Rick's memories I noticed that although he was taught his toddler skills, Rick still grew up badly for both his child and teen transitions.
This leads me to believe that Edward and Opal may have produced a child for knowledge experience rather than for a family purpose. So once Opal was finished teaching Rick, Rick ceased to exist to his parents.
So anyway, you've got "emo boy no one understands me but my games" Ripp-- err.. Rick Contrary. An aspiring Fortune Sim with a love for Games. I swear this kid is the parody of Ripp Grunt (like the Roths to the Goths). He hates his family, his family hates him, his best friend is a girl, and his LTW is to be a world class ballet dancer...
... What? Has no one's Ripp ever wanted to perform ballet? No? No one?
...
Well then.
None of my hair styles fit his face well, so I went with something a little long, gave him "cool" but still nerdy clothing, and glasses. And freckles, because I think they're very cute. :>
