A vehicle collided with a train just outside of Carbon Hill Saturday afternoon in an accident that claimed the life of a 20-year-old Walker County woman.
Crystal Hutchison, 20, of Carbon Hill, was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:30 p.m. Saturday by Walker County Coroner Joey Vick. A second passenger in the vehicle, identified as Katie Gunter, was transported to UAB Medical Center. A condition report on the victim was not available.
The accident occurred at a railroad crossing on Chickasaw Road, just east of Carbon Hill on U.S. Highway 78. According to Vick, the women were traveling in a Dodge Neon and it remains uncertain who was driving. Hutchison was ejected from the vehicle when it collided with the train.
The cause of the accident has not yet been determined and is being investigated by the Carbon Hill Police Department. The local agency is being assisted by the Alabama State Troopers.
Gunter was ground transported from the scene by Regional Paramedical Services to the company's heliport in Jasper. She was then airlifted by Lifesaver to Birmingham in an effort to reduce transport time.
