First, last week's 3x07, "There's Bo Place Like Home":
The episode itself felt like it was slightly off. A lot of that may have had to do with Kenzi being off her game.
BUT! Bo's final speech to her mother? Amazing. Actual feels. The speech itself and Anna's high emotion delivering it: right in the heart.
Second, 3x08 "Fae-ge Against the Machine":
What? What? WHAT?
Wait.
What?
I feel like I haven't understood anything about Lauren's standing and/or daily living experience among the fae. My mind was blown and I was left dazed and confused. So confused.
Has Lauren been . . . publishing papers? She's publishing papers? So she has contact with the human world?
OKAY, WAIT.
Like. Her credentials. Is she like listed working for some private company that is a cover up for Light Fae interests? Because how/why are people taking her seriously?
I just. SHE'S PUBLISHING PAPERS! PRESUMABLY IN SCIENCE JOURNALS!
So, wait wait wait. If she's still part of the human world, like, does her family know where she is? DOES SHE NOT HAVE A FAMILY WHO CARES ABOUT WHERE SHE IS? And, forget Lauren for a moment, what about Nadia's family? You know, like, parents whose daughter fell into a coma while in the Congo with her doctor scientist girlfriend (who met their approval? didn't meet their approval? dragged their daughter to the Congo? simply served as a convenient means to another adventure their daughter would have gone on anyway?)--AND WHAT? Like, did Lauren tell them about what happened to Nadia? Did Nadia go missing? Did Lauren hide her and pretend she was dead?
Did Lauren have no friends who were like, "Laur, you alright? You were just in the Congo and I heard something happened to Nadia? What's going on?" HAS NO ONE TRIED TO STALK HER ON FACEBOOK AND/OR SEND HER A MILLION FRIEND REQUESTS/PMs? Because her former colleagues and peers would probably see her publishing papers, no?? No?!
HOW IS THIS LOGICALLY WORKING OUT?
I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON.
And I still have no idea where Lauren could be living that Dr. Taft could show up at her place, knock on her door (HOW DID HE KNOW WHERE SHE EVEN LIVED?!), and be all, "Oh, hey, yo, I've read all your papers and admire you and I get your chemist joke that went over gf's head, let's go out for drinks, yeah?" (I feel like he should have also been like, "Wow, your decor is really gay.")
SPEAKING OF DECOR, did Lauren's place get a makeover? I'm pretty sure it did not look mostly like that in Season 2. I want to say the sideboard by the door is different and a lot of the wall decorations that the couch faces. But a lot of the ~tributes to the (nude) female form~ still exist. God, who designed and decorated Lauren's place? XDDDDDDD (It could just be the lighting appearing brighter in that space this episode.)
Lauren was so unlike Lauren that I was left wondering if this was OOC writing or if this is just how incredibly dorky Lauren is when she's not being steel-in-my-spine serious. I mean, I guess I pictured playful Lauren as . . . not so dorky. XD I'm not quite sure I like it. It was such a departure from the maturity we usually see from her.
Oddly, this episode made me miss Nadia. Because I could see it, right then as Lauren was getting stoked up about attending an awards dinner, how Nadia and Lauren might have crafted their lives had the Congo not happened. Both of them getting their footing in their respective careers, succeeding, excelling, attending events honoring the other, how they would tease each other in the different atmospheres. It actually made me incredibly sad once I started thinking about it as I watched Bo blow off Lauren because her fae shit always seems to be running interference.
I really wish we could have learned more about Nadia, the type of woman she was, to inform our understanding of Lauren. I'm not sure if Nadia had lived if she and Lauren would have been able to rekindle what they'd had five years prior, Bo or no Bo. I think the experience of serving the fae would have changed Lauren and made demands on her life that may have driven Nadia and Lauren apart regardless if Lauren had fallen in love with another woman or not in that interim.
But even from what little we saw of Nadia, she had a playfulness that knew how to wriggle behind Lauren's serious science-love. That whole "make love by the light of the Bunsen burners," Nadia being blown off, and then Nadia turning that brush off around in an attempt to seduce Lauren? A+
And there was the Congo. NEVER GETTING OVER THAT.
However, even if they'd gone to the Congo without encountering the fae, I think their lives would have required them to figure out how to balance out the demands of their professional lives, with each of them being pulled in potentially separate directions in the pursuit of their careers (Nadia's photography dragging her around the world?, Lauren following wherever funding might take her?). How comfortable each would have felt asking the other to follow/wait would have depended on how successful each was in her field. They'd have had their challenges.
Yet even that feels more even-keeled than what Bo and Lauren seem to struggle through. Lauren plays second-fiddle and support to Bo in almost every respect and way, whether that's with her professional advice or as Bo's significant other. Bo . . . may not really understand Lauren's work or how huge her role in her life is, if we're to believe Bo's drunken dig at Lauren having a date with a petri dish this episode. As if Lauren's research didn't contribute to saving lives or as if Lauren weren't also a medical doctor and surgeon(?) who finds herself in high-stress life-or-death situations.
As if Lauren's research weren't the thing that guided Bo on her way to learning control.
It was an odd moment.
Oh yeah, other stuff happened in this episode, and it was actually pretty fun when I set aside all the Lauren stuff making me go "What? What? WHAT?" I liked that little steampunk machine.
WHICH REMINDS ME: Is Hale just using the backroom of the Dal? For serious? LAWL. Oh, Hale.
LOL and ♥ @ Anna having to do all sorts of random acting. No Kenzi, no Dyson in this episode, though.
OH WAIT, I KINDA FORGOT THAT I WAS KINDA/SORTA/PROBABLY DEFINITELY OFFENDED AT THE FOBBY ASIAN FAE. Ffs, seriously, can we not have stereotyped East Asian representative characters? I feel like I need to wrap myself up in some Lucy Liu as Joan SherlockWatson to combat that shit.
So that live chat with "Lost Girl" showrunner Emily Andras during the airing of 3x08 happened over at
Doccubus.com. The
site posted up the
full transcript, which included a Q&A session at the end. (Emily Andras also agreed to answer additional submitted Q&A questions that required more indepth answers. Those questions and answers will be posted up at a future date.)
It was mostly a madhouse because there were so many users in chat at once, even despite only a small fraction actually participating. There was also a lot of unncessary freaking out during parts of the episode and felt like a microcosm of fandom in general. Emily Andras was sort of troll-y and it was really interesting to me that she chose this specific episode to have a sitdown over at a Doccubus fansite.
The Q&A session did have some interesting questions and answers, though Emily Andras didn't answer much and was also being a troll (in a self-aware manner):
1.) The question of whether or not Bo siphons chi from Lauren has been bouncing around the fandom. I always assumed, yes, of course, wasn't that the point of learning control, i.e. learning to stop once she starts feeding? Apparently . . . no, she hasn't?
REALLY? This answer doesn't entirely make sense. We've seen Bo suck chi while having straight-up, recreational(?) sex without the need to heal driving that feed. So . . . whut?
On top of that, it always seems to me that the way the show depicts the, uh, victim's? prey's? experience of being fed on is as something pretty awesome: like there's some type of physical, orgasmic, pleasurable feedback for the feed-ee(?). (I'm struggling with appropriate terms here.) I've been a huge fan of this theory, so this is a bit of a letdown.
2.) Are there any other scenes that got cut (for time, budget, resources etc) that you wished could have been in?
#2 would have been amazing, not just for the potential hijinks, but also to see Lauren physically saving Bo. Which would also have made me a little >( because them being in the DUNGEONS. THAT BO NEVER RESCUED LAUREN FROM. NOT FORGETTING THAT ANY TIME SOON. NOPE.
BECAUSE SOLITARY CONFINEMENT IS NOT COOL. 3.) YES, SOMEONE ASKED WHY LAUREN'S DOOR IS ALWAYS OPEN/NEVER LOCKED/NEVER CLOSED EVEN WHEN SHE AND BO ARE ABOUT TO HAVE SEX ON THE COUCH IN FULL VIEW OF THE OPEN DOOR.
This has been one of my greatest pet peeves, as I always notice that the door is wide open and I just go: WHY? WHY IS THE DOOR OPEN? DOESN'T LAUREN FEAR FOR HER LIFE AT ALL? ARE BO AND LAUREN EXHIBITIONIST? DOES THIS ADD TO THE THRILL? (Bo would probably be down for that. Then again, for a succubus, she hasn't been shown to have many off-the-wall kinks. This needs to be remedied. Stat. Bondage. Bo needs to get into a little bondage. 'Cause Lauren is a control freak and you know Bo would get off on the thought of having Lauren submit to her. Then again, Bo would probably get off on the thought of Lauren completely dominating her and perhaps withholding and commanding? Just sayin'.)
ANYWAY:
. . . And Emily Andras hasn't even noticed the door being opened all the time. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. HOW? HOW COULD YOU NOT NOTICE? I JUST CAN'T WITH YOUR OBLIVIOUSNESS, EMILY.
But now she will never not notice. Guaranteed.
At this point I'm pretty much convinced that Lauren's door doesn't have a lock. The real question is where are her living quarters located? IT SEEMS QUITE EASILY ACCESSIBLE! Light Fae security must suck. WHICH SHOULD MAKE SOMEONE MORE FEARFUL FOR HER LIFE.
4.) Emily Andras is a self-proclaimed fan of Buffy and BSG.
5.) Off the cuff, Emily Andras seems to have given Lauren a middle name: Irene or Isotopes. In other words,
So. Lauren is "LIL." Like "Lil' Mama." I will never not make that connection now. BUT IT SOUNDS SO WRONG TO THINK OF HALE CALLING HER THAT. LOL.
ETA: OMG,
3x09 PROMOTIONAL PICS. WOMEN IN UNIFORM. MY KINKS. LET ME SHOW YOU THEM. (AHAHAHAHAHA, how flat Anna Silk looks in that shirt. XD)
