When I first saw pics of the IEF performance, I kept thinking they were from Dream Concert because in my heart I kept wishing that they wouldn't reuse those costumes. However, the recent performance (Live Power Music? JTV-Jeonju '2009 Song Daekwan Song Festival' Celebration Concert?) confirms that Fany has butchered her bangs and was trying to channel old school Madonna's high ponytail, if not the pointy bra at IEF (D:), TaeYeon is trying to rock extensions? (and not succeeding IMO), and Hyo has decided to dye her hair again?
Didn't she just dye it a lighter brown a few weeks ago? Granted, I like Hyo in darker hair. It gives her a maturer look. Unfortunately, it tends to make her stand out not as much. Just. Can't. Win.
At the recent performance, Hyo gave Taengoo a nasty surprise during "Chocolate Love." Ouch! Hyo definitely stepped on Taeng's foot. I'm not sure what happened, whether Hyo was moving too far back (Taeng pushed her forward a step or two afterwards) or if TaeYeon actually slipped on the rain-slicked stage (Sunny took a tumble during "Genie") and thus couldn't get her foot out of the way fast enough. Either way: OUCH!* What surprised me was that Hyo didn't say anything to Taeng when they finished! I'd've turned around and said, "Sorry!" Hyo, I hope you apologized! And what was up with SooYoung? Did she forget the choreography to "Chocolate Love"? She kept glancing at the others and her moves seemed really unsure at parts.
*ETA: An anonymous visitor showing some Hyo!love dropped by to suggest that instead of anyone stepping on anyone's foot, Taeng slipped and ended up snagging Hyo's heel in the process, which is why Hyo lifts her foot. In that case, Hyo, you don't need to apologize, but you should've laughed about it with Taeng because you two don't interact enough!

Besides being actually quite interesting and maybe not all that wise (do you really want to share your secret to winning auditions?), YoonA's CF Queen segment on "Strong Heart" got me thinking. I'm not sure how much YoonA has to continue to audition these days instead of being offered CF roles outright, but the actors of SNSD have had to audition in the past for their CF, TV and, in SooYoung's case, movie roles. Similary, I wonder if Jessica had to audition to land the leading role of "Legally Blonde" (perhaps she was invited to audition?).
This is where I bring in Hyo: she's not an actress and she's not a strong enough singer that other musical artists would be interested in using her (with the possible exception of Eun JiWon). She's not going to actively seek out CF, drama, what-have-you acting opportunities. Neither is she going to pimp herself out as a singer; I doubt she even has confidence in herself as a singer seeing how SM makes it pretty clear that they don't have confidence in her as a singer.
This is partly why we don't see much of her outside of SNSD.
What Hyo is good at is dancing. But if you heard a rumor that went "Hyo auditioned to be a dancer in ______'s concert/MV/stage/performance," would you laugh and disbelieve it a little? I think anyone in the industry would.
Dancing--pure dancing--just doesn't have prestige. (It's why "America's Best Dance Crew" is such an opportunity for dance crews, because the members are so often back up dancers to bigger productions: Madonna, Britney Spears, Michael Jackson, Chris Brown, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, you name it). To get work as a dancer and not go solo, Hyo would have to subordinate her status as a respectable idol and performer to someone else's status, to essentially become a backup dancer. Whereas if she were to sing a duet with someone, she would be considered more or less as the equal of the person she's performing a duet with or, if not that, a very honored/acknowledged vocalist. To share a dance stage with another artist, she'd probably have to participate vocally in that artist's song as well. (I'm thinking here Fany and YuRi's special stage on MuCore where they danced and sang along with one of their female sunbaes--it's escaping me at the moment with Son Dambi performing "On a Saturday Night" [thanks, craver199103]. Also Baek JiYoung's "My Ears' Candy.")
Which just brings us back to the snag of Hyo =/= singer in the eyes of the industry. (Again, this is only part of the story because in the eyes of the industry Hyo =/= beautiful either. Otherwise you'd see her face plastered all over things a lot more than you see it now.)
