[HD+REHEARSAL] 090328 Girls' Generation (SNSD) - Let's Talk About Love On Music Core
I lurve rehearsal footage, possibly more than the real performances. This is especially silly because you can hear all the banging of the MuCore staff putting the set together. The "Let's Talk about Love" choreo has a lot of fast-slow-fast-slow elements strung together--and Fany's movements are too on-top of the beat. Rather than a lag, she's got a headstart on everyone else. And she's really throwing herself into the moves so it's really noticeable. I do love that little wave they kick up their bodies at around 1:47 though. Very cool effect to see everyone do that in sync [@00:40]. I wish the fancam or the clip had kept running for the "Gee" rehearsal, though. =(
So (talk show?) celebrity Kim Gura made a comment that HyoYeon of SNSD and one of the members of boy band SS501 (not familiar enough with them to remember) were the least popular members of their respective groups. In Hyo's case, this is probably absolutely true. And I'm not surprised he was the one to point it out; when Jessica, Sunny, Tiffany, and SooYoung were on Radio Star with Kim Gura, he asked about HyoYeon and her lack of appearances on TV. I was just reading another translated article today about SNSD, which listed the members' individual activities and it really hit home: Hyo really is the only member who doesn't have one solo/outside of SNSD activity to her name since their debut. Damn. Of course, fans (ironically) took offense to this and apparently shot HyoYeon up the list of searched peoples on one of the main Korean engines (either naver or daum). The upside is that since Kim Gura made his comment, HyoYeon fancams have been leaking onto YT. Before this, I could have probably counted the number of Hyo fancams I've seen on one hand. I wonder why Hyo fans hadn't/haven't been as enthusiastic to share their vids. I suppose it doesn't help that she's so often dancing in the back.
Honestly, though, I've wondered what HyoYeon could do as a solo activity. SM's confidence in her vocals clearly shows in the minimal amount of lines she gets in SNSD's songs. She's kind of shy (and impulsively random) so being an MC or DJ isn't the first thing that comes to mind. She's not much for acting either, as is clear in SNSD's cameo in Unstoppable Marriage. She's on the short side to be a model and the amount of flak she gets for her appearance probably discourages interest. The girl is a dance machine, true, but being a dancer has nowhere near the prestige as being a singer: the big SNSD vocalists (TaeYeon, Tiffany, Jessica, SeoHyun, and Sunny) can lend their vocals out and it'd be an honor for them whether it's a small bit or a fullblown solo song, but where do you lend your dancing skills? To be a back-up dancer, usually. Which is why America's Best Dance Crew has been such a big thing--those "back-up" dancers are brought to the forefront and allowed to showcase their skills. Yet, HyoYeon's role in SNSD sometimes is little more than back-up dancer sometimes: see the "Let's Talk about Love" performance. She and SooYoung don't sing a solo line and I'm not even sure HyoYeon actually sings in the chorus. Ah, Hyo, what is to be done with you?
Also sadness, I don't know if it's true and I can't seem to confirm it (my google-fu reveals nothing), but Hyo's Little Winners dancing buddy Lee MinYoung is said to have given up trying to debut with JYP USA. Sadness . . . though not surprising if true. Asian musical artists have a really hard time in the US music industry as it is and taking an untried artist and trying to hammer her into success here would be doubly difficult I imagine. BoA and Utada Hikaru are having to fight for every ounce of success they're getting now and they were/are icons in their native countries. Not to mention that the image that JYP had crafted for Min made me cringe. But if Min is back in Korea, can someone please throw the her and Hyo back together for an underground performance?
