How Korea can not be sick of "Gee" I have no idea. Since its release, SNSD has been doing nothing but promote the song and the album, meaning appearances and live performances everywhere, coming at the nation on TV and radio. In my opinion, the radio performances are more fun because it's mainly about the singing and not the choreography, leaving the girls to be as silly as they want. Radio appearances also have the added bonus of the girls coming in dressed down--glasses for the win! With every idol group, though, you're bound to get criticisms along the line of "no talent hacks," but they're certainly not afraid of performing live. Jessica, especially, comes off really strong in "Gee" near the song's end. Check out a radio studio's recording (see also the one of Himnae, minus YoonA) of the girls singing sans the audio track. Also notice that it would be hell to perform when it seems like your fellow members seem out to make everyone laugh (YuRi, HyoYeon, SooYoung, the three musketeers of mischief!).

I keep wondering what SM was trying to achieve putting these girls together. TaeYeon and Jessica, and to a lesser extent SeoHyun, Tiffany and Sunny are the vocal powerhouses, YoonA is like the commercial golden child, SooYoung is all model material--at 170cm/5'7" she's the tallest and about the skinniest, and gives that high fashion vibe in photographs--while YuRi and HyoYeon seem like the dancers that were thrown into the mix, though admittedly YuRi has a ton of commercial appeal. I'm just not sure how this was all supposed to come together as a musical girl group. If they wanted vocals, they could have easily pared it down to five or six. All of them can dance--it's kind of mesmerizing to watch them all waving together like it's high tide--so as a musical group I'm not sure how much they would lose cutting out dancers. It's pretty clear, too, that some members are way busier than other members. It seems exhausting for a member like YoonA to have to balance an acting career with a singing career.

With 9 members with differing personalities, though, they have great idol chemistry in that they're interesting to watch. So who's the real boss in SNSD? SeoHyun, the youngest and possibly the quietest in public, lol. The maknae sure gets a lot of love, but she's a sensible, studious girl (she carries around English and Japanese conversation books to study in her free time!), so her orders to her "older sisters" seem to be in good sense and concern, like making sure they eat right. That scene in the reality show "We Got Married" when she and YuRi go to the grocery store with TaeYeon's prospective "husband"--despite SooYoung being TaeYeon's self-proclaimed husband?--and SeoHyun keeps denying the guy's suggestion of chips and fried foods was hilarious--YuRi was cracking up so badly. Half of the small percentage of times that SeoHyun actually speaks seems to be in an effort to deny something another member said about her, especially if it's SooYoung (lol, "She's disgusted by boys"--poor SeoHyun having rumors spread about her by her own members!). Then again, SooYoung and HyoYeon, and maybe YuRi, are the last people I'd want to witness my shortcomings. While the members pretty freely talk about each other, these particular members seem to have little compunctions about airing the others' dirty laundry. I'm surprised these girls haven't beat each other up yet--or that other people haven't beat them up yet. I find myself wincing every time one of them says something that they probably shouldn't have said on national television. (Someone has to reel in HyoYeon before that girl gets herself into trouble. I like the girl's silliness but I have to wonder how many people she might have offended along the way with an ill-timed sarcastic remark.)

snsd, we got married, shimshimtapa
