So Nyeo Shi Dae/Girls Generation *defeated sigh*

Eff! I knew if I looked into them, I'd get interested in So Nyeo Shi Dae/Girls Generation. I think their live radio performance of "Gee" shows the different air they give off from Morning Musume. The girls are really chill, enjoying themselves and the act of performing with each other. There are little things that speak to individual personalities--dancing queen Hyo-Yeon, for example, unable to resist choreography--and to group dynamics--Hyo-Yeon giving Yu-Ri a little punch in the cheek as the latter is singing her solo line, youngest Seo-Hyun doing some dance moves with Tiffany. There was another performance on this radio show of "Oppa Nappa" that showcases kind of a . . . it's almost unprofessionalism because how casual they are with each other. Yu-Ri was obviously doing something under the table to make Tiffany crack up and be unable to sing. I think this trot song they sang live reveals an energy about them that's fun: they go on a radio show and are practically kicking it like it's a karaoke club: each is eager to sing but there's no set order and no one is quite sure who's going next. Back-up vocals are just provided by fellow members or the radio hosts at odd times. They're all getting down: again, Hyo-Yeon decides to start doing a little popping, lol!, and Yu-Ri, often considered the second best dancer, sees it and is like, "Hey, I've got dance moves, too!"

Flashback to about two years ago, 2007, and the fascinating mini-documentary "Girls Go to School" that provides a partial insight into the Korean idol industry as the girls work toward their debut. Can you imagine living together in cramped quarters with 8 other girls around your age, all of you being attention whores, and having to work with them, too? Oh my God, my head kind of explodes at the thought. The girls are young and playful but they work hard, too. I don't think I could handle working in an industry that would screw around with me so much. It's interesting to see them clash and work well together. It was funny when the girls had a heart-to-heart during Tiffany's birthday and one of the girls was talking about training with Soo-Young a lot in their trainee days and then, at some point, Soo-Young hit a growth spurt and sprang up to 170 cm, lol, becoming the tallest member. Whereas Tsunku fashioned Morning Musume to be the girls-next-door that are suddenly given a chance of a lifetime, SNSD is more like, "the girls who were recognized to have star potential from a young age and were groomed towards some, as of yet undefined goal of breaking into the industry." SNSD just happened to be the means for these 9 girls--or, rather, for a portion of them because some of them were already doing advertising work, etc.

I can't help but be charmed, too, that they're so openly aware of the potential for scandals in their lives and that they play it up [Sunny and Soo-Young at around 4:46]. Their silliness has the potential to provide hours of mindless entertainment in the way Hello! Morning did.

To see where they are as a group now, all nine members' appearance on Tae-Yeon's radio show is a fun, then serious look. I find it amazing that they've been living with each other all this time.

Also, doesn't it seem like a faux pas to sing your own version of your rival's song, Wonder Girls' "Tell Me"?
