Xena Fanfic Recs
Some Xena fic recs 'cause... why not? I'm enjoying watching the Warrior Princess kick lots of (ridiculous) ass. I can't help but idly wonder what kind of kill count Xena must have. After reading so many comics (that's not Punisher), it's weird to see a hero (?) willing to bring about the Greater Good by the sword. To be honest, the implications of the ending of the series troubles me because... well... passing on the chakram like that and having Gabby turn out as she did is a bit disheartening. What happened to you, Season 1 Gabby? ;_;

I've been reading through Beowolf's work. (I keep wanting to spell it Beowulf. Dammit.) I like the Solstice somewhat standalones: "Solstice Eve", "Solstice Morning", "Another Time, Another Solstice Eve", and the related "Crossings". They're short, sometimes sweet, and a little sad and good enough to make me get past my stylistic pet peeves.
Like Jim's "The High Pass", enjay's "The Ghost in the Forest" makes me wish this author had written more. Argh. =/
WordWarior (that's not a typo and if I had actually noticed that before, it might have deterred me from reading the following fics) has a Xena and Gabrielle Series that starts with "Truth or Dare", but to be honest I wasn't too keen going on to the other parts. The original character can grate a little bit (a little too perceptive, perhaps? It made me reflect with a little horror if my original characters are like that), but I really enjoyed the characterizations of Xena and Gabrielle, so this first part is a good read. Go one if you're so inclined. The humor fics "Bad Sex" and "For the Love of Cliches" are fun and funny.
Speaking of humor, "Armageddon Tired of Conquering", based on the Hercules episode where Alcmene is killed and Xena goes on to conquer the known world, is a fun fast funny read.
Re: the proliferation of Xena, the Conqueror fics. Gabrielle always ends up like a slave or a voice of opposition or something. Is there a fic where Gabrielle ends up being an advisor to the conquering Xena? I mean, in that rather than being Evil Xena conquering the world, Xena ends up taking over lots of the world with the intentions of governing it well (and not through fear)? Just a random thought. And it wouldn't surprise me if it has been written--there are like a million Xena fics. ;_; How am I to divide my time watching 6 seasons and trying to read fic?
ETA: Whila googling to see if anyone has ever listed Xena's many skills (which, btw, include embroidering--I love how pissed off Xena looks/sounds when she delivers her "I have many skills" line in "The Black Wolf" episode), I found this little nugget: an excerpt from Nicolodeon magazine explaining Xena and the Xenaverse (is this for real?). But what caught me was this little tidbit at the end:Also, there is an article in this magazine with an interview of Joss Whedon, the creative genius behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Among other questions, Joss is asked "how everyone's favorite vampire slayer would measure up to other famous toughies", such as Dracula, Catwoman, Mulder and Scully, and of course, Xena. Here was his reply about Xena:
"I love Xena very much, but I'm not going to tell you she could beat up my Buffy. Couldn't happen."
:O Buffy vs. Xena. Who would win?
