field ecology's imprinting me with a potent dislike of inflexible, proselytizing vegetarians. I want to cook and eat fish, dammit! I understand that you don't eat fish, and I am willing to cook tofu for you. why won't you allow me to cook fish for myself and my fellow fish-eaters?

I s'pose that's one of the main distinctions between ecologists and evolutionary biologists. highly aware of soil effluxes and carbon footprints, ecologists tend to be eco-friendly vegetarians who don't like to shower. (vast generalization, but largely true as of the past four weeks -- with the marked exception of an ecologist friend who makes it a point to shower every morning. his fellow ecologists make fun of him for this.) evolutionary biologists, on the other hand, have millions of years of evolution to cite for our clearly omnivore tooth morphology. yes, I agree that minimizing your carbon footprint is important, and I try to do it in any other way that I can -- but if we were meant to live purely on plant stuff, we'd have teeth like those of elephants and guts as long as in cows.
