Today started out just like any other day until the first ambulance of the day came in. The guy had been drinking and drove his truck head on into a parked bus. He had compound fractures in both thigh bones, one of the worst injuries I have seen her at Seattle Grace as its kick ass Ortho. The surgery it took to rebuild his legs took five hours. While I was in that surgery that damn pager went off several times. At the time I did not know that it was a six year old girl that had been pinned between the bus that the drunk ass hit and a light pole. Her pelvis was shattered, lucky for her the beautiful blond peds surgeon was there to at least stabilize her until I could fix the asshole the broke her.
On my way to OR 2 I turned the corner and smacked right into the blonde that had just been filling my thoughts. She was wearing those damn heelies. The papers she was looking at went flying around the hallway. We both bent down to pick them up. "Dr. Torres, I was just on my way to see if you were about ready to begin the surgery on my patient. " As she said this those dimples that make my knees melt made their appearence. Damn those dimples. "I did not see you there coming around the corner. I should really be more careful when going around the hospital in these things, or I might be the one in your OR."
The thought of that made me trimble. "Well Dr. Robbins, you can rest assured that you would be well taken care of." I could see her pondering this, so I continued. "I take extra special care of the important ones." This time she blushes. I just smile. Score one for me today. "So let's go put this girl back together, and afterwards I could use some food. I ahve been unable to eat all day." I hesitate on asking her to join me. "Uh... would you like to join me for my after long day of surgery meal?"
"Of course, I would love to join you." I did not realize I had been holding my breath, until she started laughin as we were walking towards the OR to srcub in. "Did you know that your face is turning red?" If it was not that red to begin with, it sure was now.
"Oh, I didn't know. I was just afraid you would say no."
"Would you two stop flirting and get to the OR now!" We both looked up to see Dr. Bailey glaring at us. I have been here long enough to know that Dr. Bailey was not mad, but just trying to get us focused back on the task at hand. "Go save the kid, then make your plans together later. This is a level I trama center, not a freaking dating service." She yells this over her shoulder on her way towards the clinic.
"She does have a point." We both chuckle at what just happened. "The girl may be stable for the time being, but she is in need of a pelvic repair to prevent internal bleeding." She nods in agreement and we quicken out walk towards the scrub room.
The surgery was tricky and got intense when the girl crashed twice on the table. Dr. Robbins was there to bring her back so that I could focus on the monumental task set before me. Her pelvis was in about ten pieces. It was like putting a jigsaw puzzle together in a bowl of jello. Good news is that I managed to fix it, and she will be able to walk again. It will take a great deal of therpy to get her back on her feet.
"Dr. Torres, you are just about the greatest Orthopedic surgeon I have ever been able to work with." Here they come again, those damn dimples are going to be the death of me. "I hope that everything that I have heard about you are true. I know some people really like you." I turn to face her in the scrub room with a quizzical look. "Well I have heard some very good things about you and when you are ready, I would like to find out for myself."
I find myself just standing there in a state of shock. Apparently the feelings go both ways. I just smile at her and lean over to here and whisper, "Join me for a drink tonight and I can show you that I can work magic with the hands outside the hospital." I can see her catch her breath at this. Score another on for me. Today is definatly my day. "So how about some great hospital food to celebrate two amazing surgeries?"
